Do you mind chopping them down?

Handyweatherstation · 09/09/2022 14:47

Jobs with trees seem to involved a lot of chainsaws but I'm not sure that's what you're look for, OP.

I'm a rural surveyor and do a lot with trees.
You could be a tree office for the LA but you will likely need an Arb related degree and also professional tree inspection to level 3 at least.

I would start in tree surgery, gain some quals and then look to move over to inspection if that suits you more.

Arb work is hard, my husband is an ex tree surgeon and it's done his back and shoulders no favours.

DH has a friend who is a retired dendochronologist. (I might not have spelt that right).

OrangeFlowersAreLovely · 09/09/2022 15:04

You might have to branch out a bit further

Orangio · 09/09/2022 15:05

Ecology type stuff? A cousin of mine studied that and is now a self employed contractor. She surveys woodlands and other areas and makes reports of them (health, species etc) and recommendations for what to plant where etc. She likes it!

lupinlass · 09/09/2022 15:13

My dh works with trees! Is an arboroculturalist (sp!?) Did tree surgery until he hit 40yrs then did a degree in arb. Is now very well respected in his profession and very much in demand!

Plantstrees · 09/09/2022 15:15

I did a degree in natural sciences/ecology and a masters in rural surveying. It really depends on what sort of job you want. I have a friend who works at a tree nursery and arboretum. She started with a horticultural degree an is more interested in unusual and exotic trees. Several other friends were tree surgeons but some gave it up many years ago because it is dangerous and requires a high level of physical fitness.

You could retrain as a forest school leader if you're interested in working with children.

FelicityRelaxington · 05/10/2022 19:27

So it sounds like veterinary science- you go into it because you love animals but then spend all day putting them down!

I too love trees. Agonising to think that a career for a tree lover would be spent cutting them down!

BewareTheLibrarians · 05/10/2022 19:32

@autumnleaves17 Not any help with a job I’m afraid, but have you read The Secret Life of Trees by Peter Wohlleben? It made me want it work with trees, live in a tree, become a tree 😁 I’m watching this thread with great interest!

Bytrgrewd · 05/10/2022 19:50

Sestriere · 05/10/2022 19:56

I’ll pay you £15 an hour to sweep up all my leaves until the trees are bare. Usually collect about sixty bags and it takes ten trips to the tip.

you in?

Nettl · 05/10/2022 20:00

You need the relevant qualifications, local authorities employ officers to decide on serving Tree Preservation Orders, works to protected trees and also managing trees on council owned land.

ThistleSifter · 05/10/2022 20:03

I know a few people with Christmas tree farms - lots of pruning and spraying, planting and pest control (rabbits), planning the harvest and managing the ongoing sizes, tree sale to trade throughout the year and trying to crack big accounts like large public Christmas trees throughout the year.

Then essentially grafting through the mass of sales to private homes late Nov until Christmas Eve cutting, selling & netting.

Each tree of course takes several years to grow so there’s a continuing range of growing trees to work with and bring on/replace ongoing.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 05/10/2022 20:07

Landscape/countryside/estates management.

Bytrgrewd · 05/10/2022 20:23

Look for volunteering opportunities too
