Is the world going mad or am I

My grandson started high school this week. It is all very exciting for him. I picked him up the other day and he was telling me everything that has happened to him. I got the story about how he forgot his pencil case and had to return to his classroom and got lost.......... that sort of thing !
Then he mentioned the teacher in his music class. She is an older lady with children apparently. She started talking about how she wanted to be addressed and how disgusting it was that men are called 'Mr' but women are called 'Miss'. The rant went on for the whole lesson and not a quaver in sight. How weird !

This did not happen. Maybe 10 minutes, which would be time well spent. Many schools are making the change from 'Miss' to Ma'am', and quite right too.

Treay · 09/09/2022 13:13

He is not a liar. Why lie about such a thing?

Children are prone to exaggeration. A stern talking to becomes she yelled at me. A quick talk about what to call someone becomes it was all lesson.

Pawpatrolwereonaroll · 09/09/2022 13:29

Teacher was right. I think it’s outrageous that women essentially have to announce to anyone whether they are married or use the hideous Ms, rather than all just be a nice, anonymous Mr. I’m middle aged and married myself but it bothers me every time i have to provide a title for a form etc. Sounds like the teacher may have approached it rather, erm, enthusiastically but i doubt it went on for the whole lesson

BrokenMatress · 09/09/2022 13:31

How odd- maybe she read the MN thread on this last week?
Or the DM did?

FuzzyAndBlue · 09/09/2022 13:36

Your family sounds like it looks out for opportunities to criticise?... there are better ways to live your life, you know?
Absolutely. How absolutely exhausting it must be for you all.

At school we always called teachers Sir and Miss. It was quick, concise and to the point. I have no recollection of any complaints about this.
Mind you that was back in the days when teachers were paid to educate children rather than try to indoctrinate them

Good God you must be old

This was what he said to me. I laughed but did not question the times. He is not a liar. Why lie about such a thing? He was a bit bewildered. Don't forget, going to high school is a massive leap for a child and he would never have heard anything like this in primary school.
I have just told my daughter and she laughed and said it's either history or drama or music teachers who are the' weirdos'. Her words not mine

He's your grandchild yes? So presumably you actually raised a child yourself. And yet you seem completely bewildered by the idea that they often talk crap. How did you get through parenting a teenager ?

But by all means enjoy a laugh with your grandson at the silly angry lady! Maybe she was on her period.

Is the world going mad or am I

Definitely you, if you believe this load of cobblers

Deadringer · 09/09/2022 14:06

Which is more likely, that a music teacher spent her entire lesson ranting about the words Ms and Mr, or that the child is exaggerating? 🤔i mean, have some sense op.

dworky · 09/09/2022 14:20

Well, she's right of course & I strongly doubt she 'ranted' for the entire lesson. What a weird post.

DarkShade · 09/09/2022 14:32

The teacher is right. I also doubt it was the whole lesson, it probably felt that way because he was bored.

Flopisfatteningbingforchristmas · 09/09/2022 14:38

I remember a supply teacher telling us she was Ms and explaining why - this would have been in 1994 so no the world isn’t changing.

I doubt she ranted for a whole lesson.

dontgobaconmyheart · 09/09/2022 16:55

Are women who don't agree with everyday entrenched sexism 'weirdo's' really, or is that exact kind of thing very symptomatic of the problem.

I don't see anyone calling your grandson a liar, and suggestions of exaggeration from a young child are hardly out of the box. I don't believe she literally spent the whole lesson ranting about this and think all of your time would have been better spent validating he argument for what she had said and opening up a dialogue about the deeply entrenched sexism and misogyny that pervades everyday life.

It is not ideal to have him coming home so disturbed that a woman called out some sexism and to have his mother suggesting it must be because she is a weirdo, along with faculty members who teach certain subjects. Much better to not live in an echo chamber and discuss valid opinions about gender that will benefit development into reasonable society.

blockpavingismynightmare · 17/09/2022 11:54

But.. it was a music lesson !

You sound like a nice family

abovedecknotbelow · 17/09/2022 13:28

Sir and Miss makes me itch, I've never understood why it's difficult to call teachers by their name. My school was always Mr smith and Mrs /Ms/Ms Jones.

My kids' primary was the same as is the secondary

LoveLarry · 17/09/2022 13:35

I'm struggling to see how the OP would indicate the world going mad

Very odd
