Starting new life in UK - what job would I be needed in?

Hi all! I'm looking for ideas for retraining. I'm 35 and British but have been living abroad for a good few years now. I've spent the past 10 years working as a self employed interpreter and while I love working for myself I think I'd like to do something that's more in depth. With interpreting you are always one step removed if you get me.

I'm worried that not having been a salaried employee for so long will reflect badly on me :( I'd love to work in the public sector and am up for completely retraining. I'd like to support my community in some way through the work I do. My background is very much languages heavy but am willing to move away from that. I'm also happy to go to any region. I have family in the north, friends in the south.

Any ideas? Anything the UK is crying out for in terms of new recruits?

Teacher? Language teachers are short supply.

Think carefully though why the UK might be ‘crying out’ for certain jobs before retraining, eg there are swathes of shortages in nursing and teaching, but look at why people aren’t staying in those jobs. If the workload is crazy or work/life balance is poor, I’d that a job you want?

ESOL teacher for a college? I see a lot of people having lessons in my local library.

Not sure if it is still the same but a couple of years ago the NHS was crying out for interpreters for appointments.

I was going to say NHS interpreter (does depend on your languages of course). That would also give you some insight into the NHS which is screaming out for staff.

Depending on your languages you could have a look at the job requirements for language analysts in the civil service- GCHQ, Foreign/ Home Office, MI6 etc especially.

Careers adviser.
There is a huge shortage and lots of jobs around.
