I assume that now the queen has died, they will print new money?

It's late and I can't sleep, just had a really random thought about money and postage stamps. That's going to be one hell of a job I imagine, and a very costly one too. Will they do it gradually or all in one go?

A new design will be made (is already made) and money printed in future will have this design, but we won't need to throw all our old cash in the bin and change it over.

KatherineofGaunt · 09/09/2022 00:22

It'll be gradual. Money with the Queen's head will be legal tender for a long while yet.

AdaColeman · 09/09/2022 00:35

Our present coinage remains valid and in use as normal. Gradually, Charles III coins and notes will be introduced, and be in use concurrent with Elizabeth II coinage.
Before decimalisation, our coinage was mixed from several monarchs, it was always fun to get a Victoria penny in your change.

It will take 2 years for notes to go out of circulation but decades for coins. I remember in the 80s when old shillings could be used as 5 pence pieces that had the King's grandfather on them.

(I looked it up earlier.)

Stamps need to be swapped now as they are using ones with bar codes.

Post boxes won't be changed unless they need replacing.

Constitutions of countries where the Queen was head of state need it up dated.

Loads of flags will have to be changed that say ER.

Thanks for the info I didn't know about this

I also remember one and two shilling pieces in the 1980s but I'm surprised that the new plastic notes only last 2 years, I thought it would be a lot more than that?

I've also seen King George and possibly even older post boxes around but modern ones now have a removable Monarch plate so these could be changed quite easily.

But this is probably one those things that will have been planned for, for decades, so now the time has come, the changes can start to be made.

as a child i remember coins with edward vii, george v, as well as george vi still in circulation in the 50's and 60's.

They've just announced in Australia that our notes will be re-printed with Prince Charles on them

Well that's handy with the removable plate.

Yes!

Currency will just be replenished at the usual rate.

Me too! I've got George V penny in a jar along with other old British coins pre decimalisation and some coins pre Euro.

Took DD2 to the supermarket earlier this evening. She had £4 she wanted to spend. Anyway found herself a little cuddly toy for £3.50. When she got her 50p change she commented that the queen was still on it. Don't know how quick she thought it would be.

cyclamenqueen · 09/09/2022 22:08

I am in my late fifties but vividly remember there being coins around with king George’s head in in my childhood . Even after we went decimal the 10ps were often old half a crown coins . Things will just gradually be phased in

cakeorwine · 09/09/2022 22:38

I nearly got someone at work today with this......

SpinCityBlues · 09/09/2022 23:00

About £130 billion I think

King Charles III

Crazy isn't it? The Queen was there for so long you forget she is now deceased.
