Schools should be open tomorrow-according to the DfE

Schools shouldn't be closing tomorrow. This is the email from the DfE to schools tonight. I suggest if your school tries to close you copy this and send it to the head and chair of Govs...and parents WhatsApp group!

It is with sadness that Buckingham Palace announced today the death of Her Majesty The Queen.
We have now entered a period of national mourning that will continue until the end of the State Funeral. Guidance providing the public, businesses and institutions with advice on the period of national mourning following the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II will be issued by the Cabinet Office and available on GOV. UK.
Once details of the funeral are confirmed by the Royal Household, we will write to you with further guidance and information.
For early years providers, there is no obligation for settings to observe particular behaviours during the mourning period. Depending on the nature and location of your setting and the tone of planned events, some settings may wish to consider closing or postponing events.
Schools and Further Education settings should remain open. Whilst normal attendance is expected, headteachers continue to have the power to authorise leaves of absence for pupils in exceptional circumstances. Any requests for leave of absence should be considered on a case-by-case basis taking into account individual circumstances.
Education and childcare settings may want to consider conducting special activities, holding assemblies or adapting planned lessons to reflect the period of national mourning and commemorate the life of Her Majesty may wish to repurpose the lesson materials about the Queen’s Jubilee produced by Royal Collections Trustt and The National Archivess. Primary schools may also wish to adapt ‘Queen Elizabeth: A Platinum Jubilee Celebration’, the commemorative book distributed to state-funded primary schools across the United Kingdom in 2022.
If children and young people are upset, Mindedd_ is a source of information to support children and young people to manage death and loss.
Education and childcare settings wishing to pay their respects by flying any flags at half-mast or holding silences should follow the guidance on GOV. UK
You can also visit the Palace’s website for more information about the mourning period: www.royal.ukk_.
We know teachers, lecturers, early years colleagues and social workers around the country have an important role to play in reassuring children and young people at this difficult time.

Of course they should stay open. It's not their grandma who's died

ThisIsNotThePostYourLookingFor · 08/09/2022 23:15

Of course the schools should open. Nothing is going to happen tomorrow that affects the general public. If they give them a day off it should be the day of the funeral

iamjustwinginglife · 08/09/2022 23:21

I absolutely agree!! I'm very sceptical of the reports that some schools are closed tomorrow

I've checked everything and nothing about Schools closing in our area.

MissPoldark · 08/09/2022 23:30

As far as I could tell it was nothing more than the gutter press whipping up rumours.
imagine what the queen would have to say about schools closing!

Just some people posting "my friends school is closed tomorrow " it's probably all bollocks.

There are no schools closing tomorrow.

That's my point-there shouldn't be! But then some people are posting on various platforms that their child's schools are or their friends children's schools are! They should just all be open!

Only poster on here I saw saying their DC's school was closed, it was a private school so they can do what they like.

NippyWoowoo · 09/09/2022 00:29

Who said they should? People have lost their minds

madroid · 09/09/2022 00:45

Settings? What's wrong with school?

FrippEnos · 09/09/2022 07:07

I admit that it would be typical of the government to post a last minute "schools are closed" but they haven't and schools are not closed.

ThickCutSteakChips · 09/09/2022 07:10

No schools are closing, it's just total bollocks designed to whip up the 'teachers are all lazy bustards who will do anything for another day off' rhetoric.

Yaaaaawwwwnnnn....

Not all early years settings are schools. Many are nurseries or 'pre-schools'.

Or childminders. They provide early years education too.

Do you have a direct link for this OP? And do you know if it applies to independent schools? Ours in its special wisdom emailed parents just after 8pm to let them know that school would be closed today. Most parents are having to rustle up some kind of child care at the last minute. Yes, I think most will manage it, but many are trying to WFH too, so definitely not in the children’s bests interests. My own child has said he would prefer some school work as a mark of respect to Her late Majesty, so I think that demonstrates what would have been right.

GoneWithTheWine1 · 09/09/2022 08:06

If they close the schools for the funeral or anything like that then the school is in the wrong.

The kids and staff don't know the Queen they don't need a day of mourning after all the school they've missed this should the last thing.

This is the second post I have seen on here saying their school has been closed. Both have been private schools. I presume they follow their own rules.

Shinyandnew1 · 09/09/2022 08:13

If they close the schools for the funeral or anything like that then the school is in the wrong.

If the government declare a public holiday for the funeral and they close schools, then nobody is in the wrong.

Unfortunately not, I got it in an email from DfE. I guess fee paying schools can do their own thing but I don't think it's fair to land parents in it like that when there wasn't any need to close today.

The children in my school loved the Queen -we did a huge jubilee focus and they are very knowledgeable about her life.

Many of the older children were sad today sad the level of respect they showed was exemplary-they could show quite few adults how to behave appropriately.

Ultimately the decision will come from government however IMO they should have the chance to play their part in such a historic event. It's not about knowing the Queen in person, it's about understanding their heritage and the country they live in.

Settings? What's wrong with school?

Not everyone the DfE was addressing is running a school. Some will be colleges, nurseries or Alternative Provision.

No one I know even considered closing. I think schools would be directed to close for the funeral, but suspect it will be at the weekend, for that reason.
