Or cluttered with paperwork amd stationery?
Does your line manager ever comment on it or leave you be?

Mines pretty messy with piles of paper everywhere. I don't have any desk drawers or shelves etc though so it's very hard to tidy it! I need to be able to lay my hands on stuff quickly.

I would say you are a teacher. I'm a TA and lucky enough to have a desk area, I clear it and wipe it down every day before I leave.
I work with a mix of people, some who like a clear desk and others who have piles and piles of paper from lessons which they keep 'just in case'.
I don't mind keeping the paper but I don't want it all over my work space.

Correct. The only times we have been told to tidy it up is when they think Ofsted are due!

My desk has a stationery holder for pens, a 2 tiered in tray for loose paper and a cardboard unit thing for folders that I keep worksheets in. The two screen computer is what I think makes it look more cluttered in my opinion.

Students' work is kept locked in a filing cabinet.

I've been hot decking for the past 20 years.... so my whole working life. Not allowed personal items on the desk and has to be clear for the next person.

dizzygirl1 · 08/09/2022 20:39

Oh and can be reported if desks aren't left today and empty.

MsNorris · 08/09/2022 20:44

We hot desk, nothing is allowed on your desk, although people do tend to gravitate towards their ‘own’ desk - just makes it easier to find people. Even our CEO doesn’t have a desk. We have a locker if we want to leave anything at work.

jay55 · 08/09/2022 20:48

Hot desk so it's always minimalist.

I worked another place with a clear desk policy and everything would be scooped into plastic bins and left in the kitchen once a week. Always mountains of shoes.

AegonT · 08/09/2022 20:50

We have a clean desk policy mainly for security but also so they can be easily cleaned. Non-confidential things can be pinned on the boards between the desks or pin boards/white boards in individual offices.

DappledThings · 08/09/2022 20:56

Another hot-desker. For about 10 years now. All paperless. Nothing on desks at end of day except the docking station, keyboard and mouse.

Used to have tons of paper, stationery, random clutter and a PC. Seems weird now.

PollyannaWhittier · 08/09/2022 21:07

I'm lucky if I can see my desk 😂I'm a science technician in a school, and the teachers wander in with anything that has been left in a lab - random equipment, leftover cover work, lost property - and just dump it on my desk instead of putting it where it belongs. I tidy it up at the end of each term or when there's a landslide, whichever happens first !

GiantTortoise · 08/09/2022 21:08

Mine is tidy ish. It's tidier than most of my colleagues' desks!

TheOrigRights · 08/09/2022 21:12

My actual desktop is very tidy, my laptop desktop is a fucking disgrace!

SomethingFast · 08/09/2022 21:15

Mine’s very tidy and I clean it down every couple of days too. Complete contrast to my house!
I’m naturally disorganised though and an untidy desk would just tip me over the edge into chaos.
As to my line managers opinion, they can seriously keep it to themselves, I’ve seen the state of their office!

Simonjt · 08/09/2022 21:16

Yes, I have a pen pot and a photo on it all the time, I only have paper work I’m actively working on out, once I’m done I put it away.

mizu · 08/09/2022 21:19

Yes very tidy - it is used by other people if I'm teaching or on another campus.

alloalloallo · 08/09/2022 21:20

My desk is a tip. I looks like several packets of post-it notes have exploded all over it. It also seems like it’s a communal dumping ground for random crap that no one knows what else to do with.

Anything confidential is kept in locked drawers (that are also a tip).

My computer desk top is a disgrace too. Every now and then I drag everything into a folder, but then just start saving shit randomly to the desk top again. I also have about 65 windows open at anyone time.

Every few months I get sick of it and tidy it up but it doesn’t take long to get messy again

I do find the mess deters people from nicking my pens/post its/etc as they can’t actually find them 😂

Darbs76 · 08/09/2022 21:20

What desk?! We have hot desked for a long time. Even people with fixed desks cannot leave anything out overnight

Rabidturnip · 08/09/2022 21:32

RampantIvy · 08/09/2022 18:11

Yes. I dislike chaos and clutter. Even my desktop on my screen is tidy. I do all of my work on a computer, and just have a notepad and pen on my desk, plus my tea mug as well as my laptop and extra screen.

This is also me.
