The reviews aren't great but it's reasonably priced
Anyone stayed ? Or live in Manchester and know the area?
It's on Portland street

Not stayed there but live in the city and wouldn't stay there if you paid me.

fluffiphlox · 08/09/2022 17:38

I have stayed in hundreds of hotels in my career. I would NEVER have someone book me into a Britannia. Avoid!

cataline · 08/09/2022 17:42

We stayed in the 'country' Brittania in Manchester once before an early morning flight.

I'm not quite sure what DH was thinking when he booked it but it really was an absolutely shithole.

I'd never book a Britannia hotel again after that experience.

I stayed in the Britannia Hotel in Folkestone. I would never ever stay in another Britannia Hotel ever again. It was absolutely disgusting. I seriously considered sleeping on the car instead.

Which hotel, out of interest?

It was the Grand Burstin Hotel. It is an absolute hole!

I wish that chain would go bust. The Britannia Group buy up ailing hotels needing a refurb and then leave them like that to go to ruin. Of course the owners (two guys if I'm not mistaken?) are multi millionaires who don't give a fuck.

I used to go to Coylumbridge Hotel in Aviemore when it was run by Hilton back in the day and it was great, so many lovely memories. It got taken over by Britannia and the reviews on TA are horrific. I wanted to go back (some of the reviews scrape an OK) but it would just annoy me to see how it is now.

One word. “Don’t!”

exLtEveDallas · 08/09/2022 18:05

Yes, a few years ago - absolute shit hole.

Good call! We stayed in the Adelphi in Liverpool (another Britannia) and it was hysterically bad!

jay55 · 08/09/2022 18:21

I stayed there, but probably 20 years ago now.
It was terrible, damp and stinky.

TheNoodlesIncident · 08/09/2022 18:22

We used to use Britannia hotels in Southport and vowed to avoid them completely after they sacked and turfed out all the live-in staff when the pandemic closed all hotels. Lots of the staff were immigrants with nowhere to go. So disgusting. Glad you're using somewhere else!

Desperate place. Choose anywhere else in Manchester. Except Sashas. Which is also Britannia but even worse.

100000% agree with this 😂😂😂.
Pick a premier inn.

My mum booked it for us when we went to Manchester for a weekend about 5 years ago. Comically awful place. The ‘faded grandeur’ front which is absolutely a front. Beyond the grand staircase the rooms are revolting.

Our room was grubby, freezing cold and the standard of a shabby 1979s b&b.We asked to be moved as it was so cold and we realised the radiators weren’t working. Moved to what I can only describe as an attic room that looked like students had been crashing it in it, but at least it was warm,

Staff were appalling. Rude, unhelpful, checking in and out took an age and they overcharged us and then argued with my elderly mother and were incredibly rude to her on checkout when she politely queried it. It took weeks to get the money back.

It’s a good location. That’s the only good thing I can say about it. I wouldn’t go back.

LynneBenfield · 08/09/2022 18:33

It’s been an infamous dump for years, OP. Look elsewhere

LynneBenfield · 08/09/2022 18:35

Oh I see you have booked elsewhere. The basic Hilton’s are exactly that, basic, but you get a clean room with decent quality fixtures (unlike at a Britannia).
