Conjunctivitis - how to stop DD getting ill

I seem to have a lacklustre immune system at the moment. Just getting over a cough/cold/sore throat and have somehow got conjunctivitis.

It just appeared yesterday afternoon and is horrible. I am wiping my eyes regularly with cooled boiled water as per the NHS site and the gritty feeling has calmed down a bit. Eyes are still bloodshot and gunky.

I have a 9 week old DD who has so far avoided getting the cough etc but is there anything extra I can do to stop her getting this?

I haven't been kissing her since I've been poorly and we're doing even more hand washing than normal. My DH is working nights this week so it is just me and her poor thing.

Have done several Lfts and all negative.

I know it's gross but breast milk works 😬

But so does saline and golden eye drops

Breast milk isn't gross (your own will work wonders. I used BM on DC2 conjunctivitis when I was pumping for DC3)

There are OTC creams too. Ask your DH to pop to a chemist and pick up what they recommend. I appreciate working nights he may not be able to get to a pharmacy that is open.... not sure if you can get this off the shelf?

Thaks so much! Can definitely do breastmilk, I was told to put it on DDs eyes when she had blocked teardrops after she was born so hope it'll work for me.

I can ask DH to pop out later once he's had a sleep. Our local pharmacy are very good so hopefully they can help.

Cool chamomile tea is a wonder on conjunctivitis. Told to me by a doctor and I put it into practice. Perhaps wipe a bit of that over every couple of hours? I only made a cup each morning and kept it in the fridge.

Also fabulous at soothing the dry skin on your hands.

I think the main thing is not getting it so very strict hygiene. I would change all towels, bedding or whatever you both are touching constantly, very high degree wash and ironing, washing hands non stop.

My eyes were 99% cleared up by Saturday, just feeling a bit gritty still. DD had been fine thankfully.

On Wednesday this week we went to our 2nd week of Mum & Baby Yoga and my eyes started feeling worse within about 10 minutes of being there.

When I initially got conjunctivitis last week it was after the class. My eyes started feeling sore during the class & a couple of hours later they were red & gunky.

I'm wondering now whether it's allergic conjunctivitis to something in the class, although I have no idea what! Never been allergic to anything before, so it's very odd. I took, an antihistamine when I got home yesterday & cleaned my eyes and while they are more red & gritty than they were on before the class, there's no gunk.

Also, when DD woke up from her nap yesterday she had a gunky eye! I can't tell if her eye is red but it does keep needing to be wiped. She had blocked tear ducts when she was born so it's possible that has returned but it all seems too much of a coincidence.

I keep some of these in the first aid cupboard. They are great as eye rinses but also good for wound cleansing and nasal rinses.
