What might be the cheapest way to cook my jacket potato?

Microwave? Electric oven? Or combination of both?

Would it be massively cheaper to boil?

If you are using the oven for anything

Antarcticant · 08/09/2022 12:07

Start off in microwave for speed, finish off in air fryer so it's crispy.

CaptainMyCaptain · 08/09/2022 12:07

Whoops! If you are using the oven for anything else (like a cake) stick a few potatoes in and use or freeze them.

Another vote for microwave, then airfryer (for those who have one). We tend to microwave them for 5-10 minutes (depending on how many we're cooking at once) then brush on some oil, with paprika/sal/pepper mixed in, and air fry for a bit. Delicious, crispy skin, fluffy inside. Then I go and mash butter into it.

Might have to have jacket potatoes for tea now.

Wrap potatoes in foil and stick them in a bonfire!

Oh, you can't beat a bonfire JP!

FusionChefGeoff · 08/09/2022 12:56

Definitely get organised and start throwing them in whilst you're cooking something else

Isseywith3witchycats · 08/09/2022 14:14

microwave first till a knife goes straight through so you know they are cooked a big potato takes on average ten minutes five minutes each side (i do them for five then turn over ) then as you have a combi ten minutes at 180 on convection

ShandaLear · 08/09/2022 14:19

As an alternative, get some little potatoes, prick them, and toss them into the air fryer with a big teaspoon of oil (you don’t need to coat them in the oil or anything - just chuck it in) and plenty of salt and pepper. Cook them for 15 minutes at 200 degrees. Food of the Gods.

WhoppingBigBackside · 08/09/2022 14:22

I microwave it for a few (about 3 or 4) minutes. Let it stand for a minute. Turn it over and microwave for another few minutes.
Add filling then ping for a minute.

Can't beat one made in the oven though.

WhoppingBigBackside · 08/09/2022 15:00

ShandaLear's airfried spuds sound delicious.

Oblomov22 · 08/09/2022 15:16

Through choice, irrespective of cost, I have always microwave ours and then put them in the oven.

@BarbaraofSeville

"Maybe so, but reheated baked potatoes are nasty."

Actually, They are one of my most favourite things. I cook a few. Add toppings. Put in Chinese takeaway container. In freezer. Pull out for lunch, microwave. My favourite lunch.

Madcats · 08/09/2022 15:25

After microwaving for a bit (until nearly cooked) we put a bit of water and salt on the skin and stick a skewer through the middle before putting in the oven for 10 mins.

Baked potatoes are supposed to make great mash (but I never remember).

GothicSierra · 10/09/2022 18:25

I made jackets last night, two in the microwave cooked for 8 minutes, then into the air fryer for 10 minutes, super

CatLadyDrinksGin · 10/09/2022 18:27

Have a look at Remoskas from lakeland- basically small plug in ovens. Mine was £20 from facebook. Uses a lot less electric than the main oven so perfect for smaller items.

Diplidocus4 · 03/01/2023 15:29

I've made veggie chilli and want jacket potatoes to go with it , have wrapped in foil and put them on top of the log burner which was lot anyway.
Think inside will burn them , so trying the top !

MrsBrandonspiano · 03/01/2023 15:30

I've started stacking mine around my logburner. They are beautiful
