Fireplace brickwork: Was this a good decision?

My lounge had an open fireplace, but we're now installing an eco-stove. Today the original fireplace insert was removed, exposing the brickwork inside the hearth. The installer says the bricks are in relatively good condition, and most people want to leave them exposed, but some people want them to be lime-rendered and painted (usually black), especially if they're in good condition. Mine are obviously sooty. He said they can't be cleaned, which I think is unfortunate, but he said most of the soot will be hidden behind the stove and the liner pipe above. We'll be getting a slate hearth and slips fitted, so the slips will also limit the view of the bricks. So, I went with his steer and said we'd stick with the unrendered bricks. Do you think it was the right decision?

Yes.

bloodywhitecat · 07/09/2022 15:12

Yes.

StrikeandRobin · 07/09/2022 15:12

I think the bricks will make a nice contrast, I’m assuming your eco stove is black?

Definitely.

I'd prefer that to black . Yes.

minipie · 07/09/2022 15:15

Are you keeping the surround?

I’d say painted black would look best if the surround is staying (as it’s quite a formal period fireplace so doesn’t “go” with the informal/industrial look of exposed brick IMO) but brick if the surround is going.

Mossstitch · 07/09/2022 15:24

I'd leave the bricks. My builder told me my bricks weren't in good enough condition to leave exposed when I had logburner fitted so was plastered which has cracked with the heat 🤷

allatsee · 07/09/2022 15:44

Yes, keeping the surround. Adding slate hearth and slips.

100% - wish we could have done this

OldTinHat · 07/09/2022 16:50

Yes. I did the same in my last place.

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 07/09/2022 16:53

Made the right choice @allatsee ! Lovely and classic.

onmywayamarillo · 07/09/2022 17:55

Yes

We are doing a similar thing at the moment. Have decided to firm brush/scrub the bricks. And paint over a water/pva mix in a bid to seal it and prevent recurring dust. I'll post a pic tomorrow if if interest!

Did you have any final pictures of what you went for? We have a 1909 terrace property and hoping to create something similar. Any advice or tips really welcomed thank you

I'm not the OP but this is how our place was when we moved in and we kept it. Old soot blackened bricks still visible. I like it!

Yes, it's lovely.

PragmaticWench · 14/04/2023 16:42

Where are the slips going, if you're keeping the surround? Slips go on the wall but you don't have any exposed front wall between your surround and the inset.

DecemberRolo · 14/04/2023 17:09

This is the current fireplace (whole house decoration pending!) in the front room. I’m hoping there’s going to be done lovely bricks behind but wondering about the wooden mantle? If it’s from the 60s or 70s I don’t want to keep but if it’s from around the time it was built (1909) I’d like to keep and incorporate it. Any tips? Or know where to find out? The lines on the side are feeling familiar but not sure about the flower detail on the top.

allatsee · 14/04/2023 17:32

Yes, here it is. We left the brickwork exposed in the end. We also got a template slate hearth which was cut to fit around the existing mantlepiece.
