Fruit flies!!

Bloody annoying things that they are!

We have been getting these little arseholes in the kitchen every day - only the kitchen. I found out my husband chucked his Nando's half chicken in the bin rather than our food caddy and that's when the flies appeared.

We are in an area where our landfill bin gets emptied once every 4 weeks. And in that period, we had 2 Nando's takeaways and both times, dh has chucked the leftovers from his half chicken into the bin! So hence the fruit flies! Never had them before!!

I have deep cleaned the kitchen, there is no 'source'. All fruit and veg is in the fridge and I have deep cleaned everything - hob extractor, fridge, bin, you name it - it's been cleaned. I have the stickers on the back door and kitchen window which sticks flies to it - no luck. I have a tub of white wine vinegar and fairy liquid topped with water - a google 'hack'. I have found one in there.

The outside bin has been emptied and we have a company who washes and disinfects the bins so that's all clean too!

I am managing to capture the flies by just clapping them in between my hands and scrub them straight after. It's been 3 weeks and I'm getting a good few a day in the kitchen!

Any advice on what else I can do?

House is clean, no food is left out and no food is rotting anywhere.

Following with interest as we have the same

Put a banana in a glass, cover with cling film and poke holes in the film. They will fly through for the banana but can't get back out.

It’s much more likely they got into the house via some fruit you bought than the Nandos in the bin! The eggs are invisible so wouldn’t know you’d bought them home with your bananas. We had them recently and then vinegar washing up liquid thing wasn’t effective. Instead I put a cut in half satsuma in a bowl with a splash of white wine (any fruit would probably do), covered with cling film and poked a couple of holes through using a fork. Left 2 of these out overnight, it caught loads which I promptly washed down the sink. Gave the whole kitchen a good anti bac wipe down in case of eggs and thankfully they didn’t come back.

I'll try the fruit in clingfilm.

I thought it was the Nando's as when I opened the bin to put the kitchen bin bag in, loads of them flew out of it! I had the back door opened so just assumed they got in that way.

Didn't consider them coming in with the fruit

Close the windows, Indorex the kitchen and go out for half an hour. Job done.

Hmmm not sure about that - me and dc are asthmatic - wouldn't that irritate us?

The wine vinegar with fairy liquid usually works for me. We have an infestation at teh moment too.

ShinyPikachu · 07/09/2022 12:39

I just leave out a small glass with some leftover white wine or vinegar in it and they drown themselves. No need for cling film or washing up liquid, I've tried both of those and I've always caught more of them just doing it the simple way.

Rainallnight · 07/09/2022 12:40

We’re inundated with them at the moment.

WalkingOnSonshine · 07/09/2022 12:41

I’ve heard bleach down the plug hole.

They seem to be everywhere this year and I’ve never noticed them previously.

OldTinHat · 07/09/2022 12:44

Time flies like an arrow.
Fruit flies like a banana...!

Not helpful, I know!

vinoandbrie · 07/09/2022 12:53

I am having trouble with them and have done all I can. I’ve even put the kitchen bin outside, such is my level of dedication to getting rid of them. Ugh!

I’ve just bought these and they seem to be working

I second this - I simply leave a small jar with some vinegar in it in a corner out of the way, and periodically empty it and refill. Does the job. The buggers don't know how to swim!

ChippyTea16 · 07/09/2022 14:27

I am having the same issue! Can you use normal vinegar or does it have to be white wine vinegar?

ChangedToday · 07/09/2022 14:34

I used cider vinegar because that's what I had and within minutes the flies were already crawling on the outside of the cling film. Small glass with an inch of vinegar, sealed with clingfilm and a few holes poked in with a skewer. Still get the odd one flying but it gets rid of the majority (who drown happy?).
Ours are currently coming in with the tomatoes and apples harvested from the garden.

FictionalCharacter · 07/09/2022 14:40

It would have been fruit that brought them in, not the Nando’s. They don’t go for meat.
The vinegar trap is the best bet but if you’re only getting a few each day, can’t you just ignore them? We get them from time to time and if it’s just a few hanging around we’re not bothered. They are short lived and there will soon be none left. They’re harmless- they don’t carry disease like houseflies and bluebottles, or affect your food. If they’ve been crawling on your fruit you just need to wash the fruit.

HebeSunshine · 07/09/2022 14:41

This is why you don't kill spiders!!!!

PoorlyPooch · 07/09/2022 14:42

We make sure to poor some boiling water down the sink each night and that seems to help.

Urgh chemical spraying in a place where food is prepared? No just no.
