In need of helpful MN advice. We moved to a new town last week and I can see I'm going to have issues with parking unless I do something. I've just returned from an impromptu 2 mile walk to school because some numpty has parked in front of my drive - again - and is still there, meaning that my plans for the rest of the day are out of the window until they rock up to move the car - could be all day if it's a commuter. 😡

Diagram is attached, because I am an Old and Seasoned Mumsnetter 😉 Hopefully (!) you can see there are several potential places where parked cars could block me in. I'd have thought it was bloody obvious that there is a driveway and access needed for other cars, but apparently not.

Other than the stroppy note I've left on the windscreen, what can I do?

Sorry my arse sent the last message mid way through.

have you got a dropped kerb? If so ask council to paint lines? They should, it will take a while though. I’m mean time can you park across your own drive? Or (if both blocking the path) slightly out of it?

Seeline · 07/09/2022 11:57

I think the blocked access/dropped kerb thing only relates to the public highway. The OP hasn't clarified the stays of the land which is used as the car park.

Xiaoxiong · 07/09/2022 12:11

You definitely need a cross-hatch box painted in front of your drive, otherwise people might just think "oh yeah there's loads of space there to get out" and not realise they've actually blocked you. Council would be your first port of call I think, and let them tell you if it's not an adopted roadway.

bloodyunicorns · 07/09/2022 12:11

So even if you get out of your drive, other cars have blocked you in at the end of the car park so you can't get into the cul de sac?

I agree - contact the Council!

Seemslikeaniceday · 07/09/2022 12:12

First stop is the Council.

if they don’t own the land then search the Land Register for the owner. www.gov.uk/search-property-information-land-registry

Check your deeds as you should have ROW access to your property.

As an interim measure get some line marking spray from a DIY store (used to mark out the ground for extensions, garden landscaping etc)
and spray hatched marking and required for access on the ground. Check it’s non-permanent first.

As I was walking home sweatily this morning I did contemplate zip-tying the bumpers of repeat offenders to the railings. Just enough so they'd damage their own cars getting out. I could be on hand to say "kids, eh? It's a dodgy area, I'd not leave my car there if I were you.." etc

Are you a bit evil? Grin

Bonniegirlie · 07/09/2022 16:18

Phone the police. If the vehicle is parked on a public road and is causing an obstruction they can put a fixed penalty notice on it.

Leave them a juice lipstick kiss 💋 😚 xx sign of affection

blardy hard to get off

Whippetquick · 07/09/2022 16:22

I get this regularly and I now park o er my own drive becsuse im.sick of the abuse from people ehen i ask them to move. Got spat at a a few months ago a fist raised as if to punch ne. Scum bags

BarbaraofSeville · 07/09/2022 16:23

Is it still there Shock

If you're near a station used for commuting and this is a regular problem, sounds like you might need some lines/hatchings painted to make it very clear where not to park, as if a dropped kerb isn't enough.

Non serious suggestion (sadly, as it's probably a motoring offence that will get you into trouble).

Buy some sort of scrappy banger for a few hundred quid and 'accidentally' bump the offenders cars squeezing it on and off you drive when they block you in.

BarbaraofSeville · 07/09/2022 16:24

Or you could at least just let all their tyres down. The few minutes delay it will cause them to pump them back up will be nothing compared with your entire day being disrupted and it might put them off parking there again.

WaveyHair · 07/09/2022 16:29

Don't park here - on their windscreen- in lipstick. It is a bugger to remove.

See if there is a company car park permit on the car & complain to the company. If the main car park is full people may try to park nearby.

UnbeatenMum · 07/09/2022 16:37

My friends road is a bit like this. The person at the end had taken to not issuing their driveway and parking in the road in the space that could be used to block them in so that no one has a chance to.

Surtsey · 07/09/2022 16:38

Move your car so that the bumper is a couple of millimetres away from their side door.

LollingAround · 07/09/2022 17:01

Can you ask the previous owners if they had the same problem and what they did about it?

IShouldProbablyHooverMore · 07/09/2022 17:22

The Grange at Northington. We stopped off en-route somewhere, thought we'd take advantage of our English Heritage membership. The place was deserted, and there were piles of dead and decaying ladybirds on the inside windowsills. The whole place felt really eerie to me - my husband loved it though!

IShouldProbablyHooverMore · 07/09/2022 17:23

Sorry, wrong thread!!

chocolateisavegetable · 07/09/2022 18:30

Penguins bollards or a rugby team usually work. Fabulous diagram OP!

ImpartialMongoose · 07/09/2022 18:33

Could you park in front of your own drive, thereby blocking them from blocking you?

ImpartialMongoose · 07/09/2022 18:34

Just seen a PP has suggested this.

Sally872 · 07/09/2022 18:43

When the car moves I would park there so you are blocking your own drive but meaning you can get out tomorrow. Ridiculous you would have to but only solution I can see.

Excellent diagram 👏

PuppyMonkey · 07/09/2022 18:45

Well now I also need to know about the dead ladybirds. Grin

dresseduptothe9s · 20/09/2022 17:04

Sorry to abandon the thread, but thanks all 🙏. I invested in what my DC call a 'grumpy old lady' sign that says 'don't block the driveway'. Only had one since then who tried to park a bit close, and a Hard Stare from the doorway made him move PDQ. Fingers crossed it'll work for a long time!
