Insulate Britain - not looking like nutters now, are they?

jlpartnerrs · 06/09/2022 22:34

5 billion is what they said it would cost to get insulating the nations leaky homes starting with social housing
With the govt spending up to £130 billion a year (predicted) to cap our energy costs, that's revenue expenditure not capital investment like insulation would have been .... which of those actions look the most sane?

Whilst I agree with their desire for better insulation, the way they want about it makes them absolute nutters!

Stopping emergency vehicles, people going for medical treatment, children getting to school. There are much better ways to protest than risking peoples lives.

NewHopeNow · 07/09/2022 19:15

Nutters is way too kind. They are disgusting.

They still look like nutters to me.

The disruption they caused did nothing but outrage a lot of people. They didn’t advance their cause, if anything quite the opposite. And they’ve most definitely played a part in Priti Patel’s attack on protesting.

I’m sure climate experts at the time agreed with their message. Unfortunately they picked a very ineffective means of communicating it.

The bloke who superglued his face to a road was a nutter imo.

Agree with the cause though.

DuckonaBike · 07/09/2022 19:21

Well gluing yourself to a motorway is quite extreme. But given that they were campaigning for something that was self-evidently a good idea and not making any progress, I can understand why they felt the need to do something extreme.

padfootlives · 07/09/2022 19:22

It's not their cause that made them look like nutters, it was their absolute batshit behaviour.

Sadly their cause got lost in all the madness and alienated people who may otherwise have gotten on board. Counter productive.

TonTonMacoute · 07/09/2022 19:29

They are nutters, but they are also right about insulation and energy use reduction.

As a PP has said, builders don't want to build better insulated houses and energy companies don't want us to spend less money on energy, so they bribe the government to get what they want.

Hmmph · 07/09/2022 19:30

I wish they would couple their activism with some actual help/advice for people.

How do you know what insulation your house has? Or what it should have? The only option is going to some (potentially) dodgy company that obviously wants to sell you something or getting an EPC for the house which involves someone looking at your house and guessing.

A not for profit organisation who advises on insulation would be a great help

RagingWoke · 07/09/2022 19:42

I genuinely don't understand their logic.
Insulation is good, obviously, but it doesn't generate heat and compared to the other environmental damage being done would insulation really make that much difference it's worth the ridiculous and dangerous protests?

And even with insulation people would still need to use heating in homes, it's not such a huge saving that it would resolve the issues of rising bills. Lessen it sure, but not to the degree that the group could be considered sane or reasonable and the government would still have the same problems wrt energy prices.

However, if we are going to have warmer summers, then how do you cool an over insulated house? Mine is adequately insulated, and as an older house needs to breathe anyway, but we were having trouble cooling the house. If it got down to 21.5 in the hall, we were doing well.

Well insulated houses stay cooler in summer as well as warmer in winter

SerendipityJane · 07/09/2022 21:22

Maybe they should have thrown themselves under the Queens horse at Epsom ?

PollyEsther · 07/09/2022 21:31

They look like and are selfish cunts. Normal people are not the issue: protest at governments not people trying to go about their lives minding their own business.

Never ceases to amaze me how many people feel to grast this TBH.

Having a well insulated house makes a HUGE difference. The problem is people generally don't put down enough insulation. Double glazing, cavity wall insulation and decent, thick loft insulation make a massive difference to how quickly you can heat your house and how well it maintains heat.

allow · 07/09/2022 21:42

Sadly they made a reasonable course of action look like fringe behaviour.

Wisper10 · 07/09/2022 22:18

Definitely not "nutters", after all anyone who would glue themself to a road is of sound mind.

xxcatcatcatxx · 07/09/2022 22:19

No, they still look crazy

Surtsey · 07/09/2022 22:21

They didn't look like nutters before. Just anarchists keen to piggyback onto the cause so they could make trouble.

Changemaname1 · 07/09/2022 22:34

I mean even if 5 billion got spent on insulation it still wouldn’t change the fact that electric costs a fortunate and may still need a go government bailout

also it’s how they go about getting their message across that makes them butters as pp have said

RufustheFloralmissingreindeer · 07/09/2022 22:40

Nope they still look like nutters

the cause may have been right but not some of their actions

Saynotothefishtank · 07/09/2022 23:30

Everyone knows its a good idea to insulate homes. Suggest you do so. I’ve done mine. Paid for it, since it is my house. I’m not asking other taxpayers to pay for it, why should they?!

Insulate Britain were egotistical nutters who stopped ambulances getting to hospitals etc.

NewBootsAndRanty · 07/09/2022 23:34

Vallmo47 · 07/09/2022 01:36

It’s not the reason they were on strike that angered me, it was when they refused to move for genuine medical emergencies. If their mum had died due to their behaviour, maybe they’d be more understanding of others.

What strike??

BMW6 · 07/09/2022 23:41

Their core ideal may be good, but their methods are terribly counter productive.

An epic failure. They need to win "Hearts and Minds", not Really Piss People Off.

RagingWoke · 08/09/2022 10:46

There have also been grants available for insulation for years. I worked on one of them 15 years ago and they did thousands for free or very discounted. It's been an option for a long time.

Insulate Britain made poor choices in how they went about their protests, their messages and methods did nothing to help the cause. They aren't gong to repair that damage.

There's no such thing as over insulated however insulation has to work in tandem with shading and ventilation (not aircon that should be a last resort)
It's more complicated than there is just one way to do it as individual circumstances need to be accounted for so I can't tell you exactly how to make your house work as it will depend on several factors but generally over heated houses have trapped heat from the sun inside, you need to stop that heat from entering so shading (preferably on the outside before it comes through glass) but second best is inside coupled with ventilation that draws air through the house using the stack effect (heat rises l) so pull cooler air in from the bottom on the cooler side of the house (shaded or north side) and vent it out of the top on the hotter side.
The insulation isn't the problem, it's the whole building envelope and how it works together. My super insulated extension is cool in the summer but that's because the building envelope has been designed to work together to keep cool in summer and warm in winter.
