Air fryer?

Hi, I nodded a new microwave, can I replace it with an air fryer instead. I don't use the microwave very much, baked potatoes and reheating is all I do with it. Would an air fryer be more useful? I do sometimes struggle with one oven when I do a Sunday roast, would an air fryer help?

I bought one a few days ago and so far have cooked chops nuggets and a pizza.

It's super quick and you can do so much more than junk food. Ds said the chips were lovely.

Thanks for the reply. Real chips or frozen? Would it replace a microwave as I dont want 2 bulky items sitting in my kitchen!

I'm not sure as I use micro for defrosting a lot so that couldn't be done in air fryer

Oven chips.

I make real chips in mine...they are lush! (A thousand times nicer than frozen!!!)

I've just been watching AF videos.
you can't cook wet foods in air fryer.
well, you sort of can cook the wet food, but it involves hijinks. Like having to use a cake tin & cover it tightly to contain the wet food.
Things we often currently do in microwave we couldn't easily do in AF:

reheat cup of tea
make porridge
heat soup
strew apples prior to making crumble
heat apple crumble
melt cheese on nachos
heat a can of beans
soften/melt chocolate prior to baking brownies

There's a similar list of things I do on hob that don't suit AF, like steam veggies. There are alternatives, like baking veggies instead of steaming.

Still for me, I couldn't easily swap AF to replace a microwave.

It tastes better IMHO. Our son bought one a few months back and I was shocked how big it was, the preparation required to put food in and then the cleaning of the air fryer.

If you have a servant, housewife, house husband then fine but otherwise, no.

It's massive

It takes no more preparation than any other sort of cooking.

Nope. You need both😅 The air fryer for thoroughly cooking meats and crisping up sides etc. The microwave warms up everything else like teas milk, porridge and stuff. My hob gets used once or twice a week for sauces or gravy, rice. THEN I found a marvellous little counter top oven that I warm my pastries and breads up in. I barely use the gas and very little electricity these days because I unplug and plug these appliances when I need them.

ScoobyDoNot · 06/09/2022 22:53

Have a look at the ninja foodi.
It is an air fryer/slow cooker/grill & oven all in one and has a sear/sauté function for anything you'd normally cook on a hob.
I use ours daily, more than any other kitchen appliance (bar the kettle!) and it's far more economical than our electric oven.
I love it!

SoupDragon · 06/09/2022 22:54

A microwave and an air fryer are not comparable really. They are completely different.

Ahf22 · 06/09/2022 22:58

Jhc how many air fryer threads do we need? for the love of god.

Are you all being paid or what?

how much? Can I get in on this lucrative gig?

lljkk · 06/09/2022 23:00

How to cook oatmeal in an AF.
When they say "remove the pan" carefully because "it will be very hot" : I'm not sure how to do that. Or how to let a 7 yr old do that. My 7 yr old could safely make own porridge in the microwave.

lljkk · 06/09/2022 23:01

Cost of living crisis isn't it, Ahf22. Our cooker is main device that sucks our lekki. Also Kettle, microwave & TV followed by ... washing machine? Dishwasher? After that I'd be worried (not) about charging my laptop.

You're doing it wrong then!!! It's SO much quicker (and very easy to clean!!!)

Hardly any prep needed...and certainly nothing 'extra' that you wouldn't ordinarily have to do, often much LESS! The whole 'cooking experience' is so much easier 🤷‍♀️

Awayyego · 07/09/2022 07:04

I love my air fryer but you’d struggle with baked potatoes if you don’t have a microwave. I normally microwave baked potatoes for 5-10 minutes and then air fry them for 30 minutes. They’d take forever just air fried. You could get a multi cooker and pressure cook them for a few minutes, then air fry.

AuntieMarys · 07/09/2022 07:10

Do Tory MPs have shares in airfryers?

LennartandL · 07/09/2022 07:16

What is the most cost efficient to boil water for a cuppa or hot water bottle?

DianaBarry5 · 07/09/2022 18:20

Thanks everyone, maybe I need both!

I was thinking of getting one but after your post I'm not so sure.

whenwillthemadnessend · 07/09/2022 20:02

@LadyEloise1

Don't le trust put you off. Mines a big one as I want to get a family portion in but it really does cut time down hugely.
I did a frozen croissant today in 3 mins from frozen and it nearly burnt and a part baked baguette in 5 mins. Perfect.

It has to be saving energy as it's so quick
