10 year old girl hates dresses and pink but needs to dress formally, please help!

My daughter and I are going to a formal dinner. She flat out refuses to wear dresses of any kind and is often dressed inappropriately casually at events on sneakers and jeans. At her age, alternative options are so limited. She has said she’d love to wear a suit to her school formal dinner, but that doesn’t seem to exist in her size. I’m thinking Kirsten Stewart’s red carpet looks for inspiration. But the reality is little boy’s boxy suits.
She was premature so is absolutely tiny too, so dressing her in boys clothes means they swim on her and she looks terrible.
can anyone please help with suggestions? I don’t want to cramp her style, and want to support her to look how she’d like to. Thank you!

Something like black jeans, white shirt and a bow tie?

Some school clothes retailers do slim fit girls skinny trousers, would a pair of those with a black blazer and nice blouse be an option?

BigFatLiar · 06/09/2022 21:14

Trouser suit. Some places do them, had a quick look at Shein and they do some children's trouser suits, not expensive (useful if she's not keen on dressing up)

Tiredmama21 · 06/09/2022 21:15

Jumpsuit?

River Island have got some nice colourful fitted blazers for girls too

Have you seen this site? (No recommendations, just Google)

Like a pp I had thought about school uniform.

Pengweng · 06/09/2022 21:16

My daughter normally wears trousers, blouse and waistcoat to formal events/weddings as she's not a dress fan. I find waistcoats are less boxy and restrictive than a jacket. Her last one was from John Lewis paired with a snazzy dino bow tie.

abovedecknotbelow · 06/09/2022 21:16

Jumpsuit. Dts live in track shorts, baggy ts and hoodies if it's cold enough. I can just about getting them into a wide legged Juno suit for an occasion.

Pengweng · 06/09/2022 21:17

Sorry forgot to add she is also ten and very short for her age. 😁

Cucumberbund · 06/09/2022 21:18

You could buy a boys suit and get it altered.Maybe like the type a ring bearer would wear. Also very smart shoes can really alter a look. Think brogues or loafers with a cool hat. Maybe formal waistcoat with tuxedo shirt and really dark black jeans.

What about something like this

I will say though that my 16 year old who never wears skirts, dresses etc and current wardrobe is mainly from the men's department, did wear a dress for her end of school prom. I was very shocked.

MarthanotMarfa · 06/09/2022 21:20

my daughter wore a black and white houndstooth shift dress and doc Martens with black velvet laces last new year for a formal dinner. It was the least girly outfit and looked perfect. Would she consider it? I could post you the dress (not really a dress) as she’s just grown out of it now she’s 11.

mondaytosunday · 06/09/2022 21:21

Trousers (not jeans) and a sparkly top/jacket? Would she accept that?

BogRollBOGOF · 06/09/2022 21:22

My lean y7 just has to wear a plain blazer for school and with a slim fit cut (M&S) and black trousers it does look more suity than boxy uniform.

She could wear a top with it to make it a bit more fun for her age. Lots of girls of that age wear things like sparkly tops with leggings as party wear rather than dresses.

midlifecrash · 06/09/2022 21:30

Or something like a white shirt with wide sleeves, black jeans and a red cummerbund (silk scarf wrapped round twice)

Redbone · 06/09/2022 21:34

I’m struggling to think of why a ten year old would ever be expected to wear anything formal for a school dinner - or anything else for that matter. I would let her wear anything apart from jeans! ( Just wondering if you are in the Uk OP?)

MsTSwift · 06/09/2022 21:37

Mine looked gorgeous in jump suits st that age very funky but still slightly dressy

Martinisarebetterdirty · 06/09/2022 21:39

My DD is the same, took her to Zara and she was happy with wide legged cream knitted trousers, black boot cut trousers, silver top, sequin top, the very occasional jumpsuit will also be ok.

Leafy3 · 06/09/2022 21:39

A trouser or jumpsuit and then have it tailored to size.

Leafy3 · 06/09/2022 21:41

Lipsy and monsoon both have jumpsuits that would be suitable
