My husband read a book on writing by a Stephen King and really enjoyed it. Neither of us have ever read a novel of his. Any recommendations? I don’t really like horror….

Thanks!

The Long Walk is incredible but very dark and depressing.

One of my favourites! It actually makes your legs ache just reading it.

The first SK book I ever read was Carrie in 1985, then Firestarter and others followed. My faves are

The Stand
The Mist (short story in Skeleton Crew, there are several good stories in it)
The Langoliers (short story in Four Past Midnight)
Cujo
Misery
Thinner (writing as Richard Bachman)
Needful Things
It

2 of my favourite mini-series are Rose Red and Storm of the Century, both written by SK but not books

I am currently reading Firestarter again, as I have dug out all my old SK books as my daughter (14) wanted to start reading them. I used to reread them a lot but havent read any now for probably 10 years or more

11/22/63 is so good! Couldn't stop reading it and I've read it four times since the first time.

The Stand is a tome and not that amazing (King struggles with characters outside of Maine, he's fabulous when he stays close to home)
It is really is very good but again very long
Try Pet Cemetery, Misery, Carrie or Needful Things.
Avoid Christine as King himself admits it wasn't as good as he hoped.

Interesting that no one I don’t think has said The Dark Tower/ gunslinger books yet. I’ve not been able to finish the first one. Should I try again?

WallaceinAnderland · 06/09/2022 14:29

The Stand
Insomnia

All of his short stories and those as Richard Bachman

The Talisman

Absolutely. I read the original 7 plus any connected to them more than any other books.

QuebecBagnet · 06/09/2022 14:35

Just can’t get into it but will try again

Shoxfordian · 06/09/2022 14:55

Stephen King is my favourite author; I received fairy tale today, looking longingly at it from my work 😃

Some of my favourites are Salems Lot, Duma Key, Pet Sematary

11/22/63 is a brilliant Stephen King book, and not a horror. I couldn't put it down.

This is the only one I have ever read of his - couldnt get into the others at all, and agree - completely brilliant!

mangoj · 06/09/2022 15:45

11/22/63 is brilliant, loved it. Read it countless time and listened to the audiobook.

The Gunslinger is a slog, but a short one -- worth it to get through it to get to book 2 which is when the series really comes to life. I've re-read books 2/3/4 and never gone back and reread the Gunslinger.

I was a SK obsessive as a teen (my friend and I read Christine and saw the awful film together) and he's one of the reasons I love a really big, long book that I can look forward to reading every day. There's no better feeling than being in the middle of a 900+ page immersive tome knowing it will go on and on.
My favourites then were The Stand, The Dead Zone and 'Salem's Lot. I should reread them, I love revisiting books I enjoyed as a kid.

Chikapu · 06/09/2022 16:55

The Dead Zone and Salem's Lot are the only ones I've managed to get all the way through, IT was dreadful and I regret wasting money on it.

Rebelmcstreettuff · 06/09/2022 17:00

The Dead Zone
Carrie
Thinner
Pet Sematary
Misery
These are all a good read

PinkBuffalo · 06/09/2022 17:04

Needful things is his best book, I could not put it down when I read it

NooNakedJacuzziness · 06/09/2022 17:16

Loved:

11/22/63

I discovered him by accident about 5 years ago. Avoided him before that as I didn't like horror. Now I've read them all. He is amazing at plot and writing about ordinary people in extraordinary circumstances. My first one was The Shining and it was amazing. I also liked the sequel Dr. Sleep. I agree with pp who said On Writing is one of his best books. My own favourite is The Dead Zone - loved the hero and King managed a chilling depiction of a Trump-like character years before we got the real thing. I think his later ones are showing his age but still highly readable.

Also loved Carrie, Pet Semetary, The Stand and 11/23/63. And Dolores Claiborne is a fabulous novel.

I also really admire how he uses his fame to give a shout-out to up and coming writers.

Doseagullstasteoffish · 06/09/2022 18:11

The Talisman is my all time favourite book, by any author. The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon is excellent too.

Ringmaster27 · 06/09/2022 18:12

The Green Mile, hands down.

romdowa · 06/09/2022 18:13

The dark half
The shining
Duma key
Needful things
The dead zone
Under the dome.
I'm a huge king fan and duma key and needful things are my absolute favourites 😍
