4yo birthday party that's not soft play - in the winter

If it was a summer birthday, I'd happily do something in the back garden/park. But DS's birthday is February, so needs to be indoors. And the house definitely isn't big enough to have 10+ kids running around.

I'd like something that's exclusive hire - as the couple of parties we've been to that aren't have been complete chaos.

I thought about hiring a village hall and entertainment, but not sure they'll be too young for that? Maybe better to save that for when they're in primary school?

But every party so far has been soft play. Is there another thing I'm missing, just to do something a bit different?

It’s about convenience, that’s why.

Village hall + bouncy castle, lots of balloons and party food is the standard here at that age! 2 hours max. Maybe throw in a treasure hunt for chocolate coins if you want. Sympathies on the Feb birthday, my eldest is Feb too and it's really restrictive for party planning.

4yolds limited attention span limits your options with crafts or similar. You could look into other active parties run by local sports or dance groups. Little kickers for example......

I think your options varie depending on what's local to you. We've had one at a local farm, someone took them round feeding all the animals, they got to hold some rabbits, then we had a barn for an hour where we served food and played pass the parcel.

Bowling?

We did private hire soft play ( I know its what u dont want) was 6 till 8pm.
Up to 200 people for £200 hire. Food £3 a head. Dd had 30 kids go.
I madeit clear siblings could come but parents could use cafe to get their food.
I worried as at age 4 it was late. But All bar 2 came (2 who had chicken pox)
There was zero stress. Only thing i had to do was the cake after food and party bags at the end. I did sweet bags for ease.
They even cut the cake (health and safety with knives)
No public. Parents got to chill as gate locked so no escapees.

Depends on what’s local to you
most kids classes run birthday parties, think ballet, drama, football, rugby
theyll do themed activities and they are used to kids that age
some will even do them at their location, so no need to think about the space
animal handling or a farm are also good bets
also great age for a hall and a kids entertainer, think balloon animals, face painting, minidisco (and again they are used to hold small kids attention)
if anything else fails, hall, bouncy castle, balloons, and party games

At that age you want a church hall, a kids entertainer, ham sandwiches and carrot sticks. Or save yourself the bother and go to softplay.

My son's birthday is January. This year with rising covid rates we were worried about booking an indoor thing in case we had to cancel.

We did a park birthday and the kids LOVED it. We made sure everyone realised it was outdoor and to dress appropriately. We treated all the adults to a hot drink from the local cafe. We had a table with snacks and the cake etc. we did a standing pass the parcel.

It was great. I'd have never done an outdoor party if it wasn't for covid, but im a convert. DD birthday is Feb and im seriously considering doing it again for her 5th.

definitely go for the village hall option - that works very well with this age group. they are too young for crafts or most organised activities, but you could do either a bouncy castle or a professional entertainer.

Namechanger965 · 05/09/2022 22:00

Role play village place? We had DDs 4th birthday there. Paid around £200 for exclusive hire, and food, for 2 hours use. The kids really enjoyed it.

Church/village hall
small bouncy castle
loads of balloons and music for a bit of dancing/ musical bumps
classic party food

entertainer if you want- aimed at little ones like a clown or something and only for a short time as they get bored quickly.
