Is there a way to quietly find out what someone's criminal record is for?

A family member has got engaged to someone who's spent time in prison. Some members of the extended family have flat-out forbid him to ever step inside their homes. I have no idea what happened as no one will share with me. Is there a way I can quietly find out so as to make my own decision? I don't want to be confrontational and ask outright because I'm trying to keep friendly relations. Wwyd? I can't find anything on the internet and I suspect they've changed their name.

I don’t know but similarity I’d love to know exactly what went down during an acquaintances court case because they’re minimising minimising minimising and I don’t believe a word of it.

If family member is concerned re DV she can request information via Clares Law

HappyPeach · 05/09/2022 20:45

I'm pretty sure the woman involved has already done a Clare's law but that doesn't help me in this instance.

Claire’s law won’t necessarily tell you the details anyway and if it’s not Dv related then they won’t tell you anything

googling his name with ''convicted'' or ''charged'' after it yielded no clues? :-/

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 05/09/2022 20:46

If you’re close enough to have them in your home then just ask them.

whatsthestory123 · 05/09/2022 20:49

google their name in the local paper where they lived at the time if possible

SausageinaBun · 05/09/2022 20:50

I think it's reasonable to say "being invited into my home is dependent on an honest explanation including previous name, so that I can google it".

J0y · 05/09/2022 20:52

or google his name with ''pleaded'', ''manslaughter'' et cetera

J0y · 05/09/2022 20:53

Ah right, he changed his name. That is a tough one.

Criminal proceedings are public records but its hard to find information a lot of the time

Does he not have family members he mentions, and use their surnames to search?

CandyLeBonBon · 05/09/2022 20:56

All I have to do is search 'exes name and location, court' and his info comes up. It's a matter of public record. Even better if you know when it happened.

OnTheBrinkOfChange · 05/09/2022 20:57

But he's changed his name! That in itself is really disturbing.

It doesn’t I’ve just tried that with my ex who I know went to prison and nothing at all has come up and he hasn’t changed his name

Is he on any SM with his new name that you could do a reverse google image

MacNCheeeeese · 05/09/2022 21:01

Is he on social media especially Facebook? If so go through his timeline and friends list and you might be able to figure out his old name via family members surnames etc.

blacksax · 05/09/2022 21:03

If they've got engaged, then presumably they are going to get married. And on marriage certificates in England, it shows the names of the fathers of bride and groom. So unless he lies about his father's name or says father unknown, then you could eventually find out the right surname that way.

J0y · 05/09/2022 21:04

He may have changed his name but probably not what he does for a living?
eg, if you google carpenter, Slough, james, pleaded + manslaughter/rape/assault

something might come up. I doubt he's changed his first name. I suppose it depends how unusual his first name was. I am no master criminal but I'd guess most people trying to hide their past change their sur name only.

I've nobody to check that speculation with though.

yes, if ANYTHING is public, look at the people who liked his posts years ago.

OP said she wants to 'quietly' find out

So waiting until the couple are married (could be years in the future), then ordering their marriage certificate like a stalker is probably not the definition of this.

Only to find that it says father not known or deceased or is blank. He doesnt have to say who his father is.

They have already been judged, punished and are deemed to be rehabilitated. There's not a people's court afterwards. Have the courage of your judgemental convictions. If you don't want a "criminal" in your home, then refuse them and lose your family member; you can then explain your reasons whether they are good or bad. But let's not dress it up - huge numbers of people have criminal convictions or been to prison. Many more than you'd imagine. Unless you ask everyone for their criminal record before they set foot in your home, it's nothing but prurient nosing.

AuditAngel · 05/09/2022 21:10

At work we run Dow Jones checks on potential clients for AML purposes to look for potential PEPs and criminal records.

obviously we have an account, but is there an option to do a one off search?

Boreded · 05/09/2022 21:12

Pm me with what you know about them,..I’ll find them for you
