Is the prediction that the yearly energy cost of 6k next year on the basis that the heating is on all the time? Sorry if I sound an idiot, just trying to get my head around it!

It is based on 'average' usage but not sure what the average usage for heating is. You can work out what your bill will be by looking at how much you use per year in kWH then looking at the cost per KWH under each price cap. The average cost doesn't really mean anything as everyone has different houses, appliances, tolerance for cold, etc.

Anunusualfamily · 05/09/2022 15:57

It’s the cost of an average house. So probably not. You should look at your usage from last year and calculate with the new cost of kWh should give a rough estimate of your new cost

LovedFedAndNoonesDead · 05/09/2022 16:02

It’s based on maximum unit cost per kWh and ‘average’ household usage of 2,900kwh electric and 12,000kwh gas per year.

If you use more gas/electric than the average household (2.4 adults in a 2 bed house according to OFGEM) then your bills will be higher than that quoted.

I think it's looking more unlikely that amount of energy will cost householders that amount of money due to the promised help from the government, whatever it looks like.

The new PM has said 'watch this space' and it sounds like a freezing of prices so they don't go up so much, but they stay at this level after prices drop, to pay back the help later and average things out might be how they're going to deal with it, so there's no point panicking about something which may not happen.

In monthly terms, it's an increase from around £100 pm to £500 pm in around 2 years and combined with increases in food and petrol it's just too much for low to middle income households to cope with.

That's interesting, 2900 is very close to our 'average' total annual use for lekki. I guess we will see what really happens. Already bought enough oil to get thru winter so no uncertainties on that.

I am sort of aware of lekki we use now, like radio is on at moment.

NewBootsAndRanty · 05/09/2022 16:13

Your radio should be miniscule in terms of overall energy use.

NewBootsAndRanty · 05/09/2022 16:14

Same with lighting, if you're using energy efficient bulbs etc. it shouldn't be massive.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 05/09/2022 16:21

this article from the Energy Saving Trust is a good pointer on which types of appliances use the greatest amount of electricity.

Hope so, my tunes are part of my Quality of Life !!

Do people think the energy prices won't ever go back down to pre Oct 2021?

BarbaraofSeville · 05/09/2022 17:34

Don't know, but if it's supposed to be nearly £4k from October and £6k from next April and they peg it at £2k (up from about £1200 remember, all prices based on the price cap usage, yours may vary, obviously), then it has to sit at £2k for quite a while to pay back for the time it was £2k but supposed to be £4/6k.

And that's after the wholesale price gets back to normal, which is when? When we've found some more gas somewhere else, or built sufficient alternative methods of generating electricity to compensate for the Russian supply that will be missing from Europe over winter? (I know we don't get much gas from Russia, but we get some from Europe who in turn get theirs from Russia or it still increases the demand for the gas we use in the UK).

Sooverthemill · 05/09/2022 17:38

Our combined gas and electricity bill will go up to approximately £6800 based on this calculator from moneysaving expert. Its mind blowing. I don't expect much help from the Government based on all ten discussions I have heard so far. We are getting a new boiler installed and smart meters to ensure we are paying as little as possible efficiency wise.

Fallonangel · 05/09/2022 17:39

Thanks. It's the not knowing that is really starting to stress me out now. Why wait another week? Surely they know now what they have planned. If I don't get ill from the cold Il sure enough get an ulcer from worry at this rate!
