Help - need to clean my duvets.

ChicagoBears · 04/09/2022 21:27

My dry cleaner is charging £30 per duvet (we have 6) so I’m wondering what the alternative is. I always thought the duvets wouldn’t fit my machine (I’ll try them tomorrow) but if they don’t fit I don’t want to add to the landfill but it’s actually cheaper to buy brand new.

I think my machine fits 8kg but 3 of the duvets are king. Send help oh wise mumsnetters!

Our local petrol station has large washing machines that you can use for a couple of pounds that'd easily fit a couple of duvets

Launderette?

I've seen this recommend a couple of times on here, although I've never used it myself:

As above, use the big washers and dryers at petrol stations or laundrettes

Laundrette or buy new and donate old ones to animal shelters our local one always needs them and blankets

TooMuchToDoTooLittleInclination · 04/09/2022 21:33

How far away is your nearest laundrette?

our costs £7 for a large machine (double fits) load & £10 for a really large machine (king duvet would fit) singles you'll be fine in your machine.

our laundrette (&most) you can take your own detergent.

can you dry them at home? If not the dryer at ours is 50p not sure how long for, but it'll cost you a few quid to dry them, but not £10/£13 quid each,

IF you decide to buy new instead, don't put your duvets into landfill, call around your nearest animal charities vets, they're usually crying out for bedding. Animals won't mind if they're not washed.

Do you really need to do all 6 at once?

WhizzFizz · 04/09/2022 21:35

There is no laundrette within 50 miles of me and I can only fit a light single in the washer. So in the padt I've just binned and replaced.
However this year I washed a 15 tog KS in the bath.
It was a challenge, lots of water required and I got in to tread it🤣.
Left to drain for a couple of hours then outside to dry on line. Pick a dry windy day.

Forward planning: I have two duvet of differing weights. I sewed tags on the corners so I can combine the two to get greater warmth. The different combinations give me the option of summer, spring/autumn or winter weights. I can separate them so each, individually, can be washed in the machine.

ChicagoBears · 04/09/2022 22:05

Thanks all. I’ve heard some not great things about Revolution laundry (people washing pet bedding), my DC have quite severe pet allergies so I may need to do a blended approach of buying new and trying the smaller duvets in the wash and yes, I’ll certainly recycle the duvets to charity if they would like them.

How many togs are they? I managed to fit a lightweight king size one in my normal machine.

Dottyyy1 · 04/09/2022 23:08

I clean my kingsize duvet in the bath. Cover with warm water, some washing powder, a scoop of Vanish and leave for 8 hours.

Drain bath and thoroughly rinse, then try to get as much water out as possible (may need to pound with clean feet!). Gather up on one side of the bath and leave for 3-4 hours for any excess water to drain away.

This worked amazingly in the heatwave as it dried outside very quickly but could also work if there any sunny days coming up.

Stripsorspots · 04/09/2022 23:17

I wash my double feather duvets in the washing machine - a squash to get them in but never a problem once the washing machine is on.

avamiah · 04/09/2022 23:22

@ChicagoBears

Apologies if I have missed something but why can’t you take the large duvets to a laundrette.?
I have taken kingsize duvets to the laundry many times.
Do you not have any near you ?

PickAChew · 04/09/2022 23:25

I can get a 10.5 tog double duvet in my not especially roomy washing machine. My old king-size had to go to the laundrette, though.

BlackeyedSusan · 05/09/2022 01:58

Washed things in the bath. Walking on them to wash, squeeze out the water rinse etc. Put an airer in the bath. Gradually pegged more of the duvet to the airer starting with one edge to the bottom rung and moving it up gradually. Once it's light enough to lift you can hang it over an airer outside to drip.
