I work in a school.

I have been told this morning that I must dress as a hero for tomorrow. Not a super hero, just a/my hero. I’m drawing a blank and do not have anything remotely resembling dress up clothes. I do have face paint.

who can I go as? I hate shit like this So Much.

Black dress, white paper collar, hair in bun--Ruth Bader Ginsberg.

Crap like this with no notice is why I’m glad I don’t teach anymore.

I too quit teaching for this and many similar reasons, six years ago. You don’t have this nonsense in admin 😂 but, foolishly, I ventured back into the education system this year…

Wow that's incredibly short notice?

Last time it was dress as a pirate. I got a days notice that time.

weirdly, pirate was easier!

If you work as a one to one, any way you could incorporate a mirror of some kind? i.e. heroes aren't just out for themselves, but support others in seeing their own qualities?

I'm thinking shiny side of tinfoil but have always been rubbish with costumes.

Cynderella · 04/09/2022 21:29

Every school I've taught in has come up with these, and because I'm a grumpy cow, I don't join in. There are plenty of staff who love it - I've never had any grief for not doing it, and I'm far from being the only one.

Tell us what clothes you have available and we can work from there.

Or, if you have any exercise gear put that on and be Jessica Ennis-Hill/Zola Budd/Sportswoman of choice?

I’m too fat for sportswear unfortunately!

i think I’m going to roll with the jodhpurs and go as pippa funnell. She was my idol as a horse riding teenager, and she was the first person to win the Rolex grand slam of eventing. It won’t mean anything to any of them, but I’m past caring!

Love this! And dead easy if you have the skirt and jacket.

I do also love this, but I don’t have the skirt. I do have long dresses, so maybe that could work? I’m going to have to go upstairs and experiment.

Sounds perfect

SpiritedSneeze · 04/09/2022 21:31

Just remembering other costumes I have worn, once I stapled the wrappers from a tub of Heroes chocolate to my normal clothes and wire the tub as a hat with a chin strap hot glued onto it
That was naff but fun

ShirleyJackson · 04/09/2022 21:32

Jodhpurs are a good plan.

Love this! Along the lines of what I was going to say (but better). I thought maybe a class picture pinned to your shirt with some Christmas tinsel pinned around it (to make it festive). 'My students are my heroes.'

NeedToKnow101 · 04/09/2022 21:35

Wear a big fuck off Tina Turner wig and some metal breastplates and a sign saying 'we don't need another hero.' Who the fuck asks their staff on a Sunday to dress up on a Monday?!!!
Or go to Primark, buy their Greggs branded clothes and say your hero is vegan sausage fucking roll or something. I don't know!

AlohaMolly · 04/09/2022 21:38

The jodhpurs fit! Can we all take a minute to appreciate the Lycra gods

Long black dress, wholy inappropriate for wet chemistry with radioactive isotopes, and hair in a bun and say you're Marie Curie. Carry a test tube or lab flask.

HeadNorth · 04/09/2022 21:41

Pippa Funnell is a wonderful heroine - so supportive of other riders and opened up about her loss of nerve and her work to overcome it. She is amazing 🤩

Elsanore · 04/09/2022 21:43

Have you got any cuddly toy monkeys around the house at all? Wear loose clothes and a pony tail, carry monkeys around and be Jane Goodall.

Hyacinth2 · 04/09/2022 21:49

Anne Bonny female pirate

Spudlet · 04/09/2022 21:50

I met Pippa once through work, and she was really nice. She’s a great choice!

Wnikat · 04/09/2022 21:55

You can be your own hero. I’m sure my kids have several actual books that say that so don’t see why you can’t.

AlohaMolly · 04/09/2022 21:56

I’m so glad people have posted about how lovely Pippa Funnell is 😍 I really loved both her and Mary king when I was younger!

Seeing as there appear to be a couple of horsey people on the thread - does anyone remember a really lovely little mare that jumped really well at hickstead, would have been 2003-2005ish. I thought I remembered her winning it, with an older male rider that potentially was either retiring or retiring her. I did think Geoff billington but that doesn’t seem to be right either…

In your jodhpurs you could have gone as Rachel Blackmore the first woman to win the Grand National..this year.
Super lrish jockey.

lljkk · 04/09/2022 22:11

I hope you're brave enough to post us a pic, OP.

I wouldn't have a clue what to wear either, and I don't have half the items suggested here. Maybe I could go as a England footballer (Lioness, I mean, heroes to many this year)
