I'm rubbish with routines. And embarrassed to ask anyone in real life 😶whats your daily routine for reception year children? For example wake up times, dinner time and sleep time? And do they have snacks after school? and how do you after school clubs and dinner/snacking routine? Thank you 😊 daughter will be starting school at 8.55 and we live 15 minute walk from school. Determined to make life less stressful by making sure we have the right routine in place.

My daughter is now year 1 but our reception year was (don’t think will differ this year):

7am wake
7.30am breakfast
8am brush teeth, wash face, brush hair, get dressed
8.35am leave for school
school starts 8.45
pick up 3pm
once home a snack and drink
then her online maths games, practise her phonics, play with her sister, watch cbeebies
5pm dinner
6pm bath
6.30pm read a book to me/ I read to her
7pm watch tv
7.15pm up to bed
asleep by 7.30pm

Thank you for sharing! And can I ask what time does your partner get home? I struggle with bedtime sometimes as I coincides with partner coming home around 7/7.30pm and there's a second wind of excitement in the house at bedtime. Then they both want to see each and start playing!

I've got 3 in primary school, 1 in secondary. Youngest will be starting reception tomorrow. I get up about 6.30, make lunches and get myself bathed and dressed. Then I wake kids at 7, give them breakfast and get them dressed. I aim to be out the door by 8.25, school is a 15 minute walk away.

My husband is a sahd as we have a 1yr old- I wfh 3 days a week, when I go to the office I’m home at 6pm and tbh take straight over the routine so the consistency is there.

what time does you LO wake and go to bed currently?

Bemyclementine · 04/09/2022 18:36

Mine are Yr1 and 3 this year but same routine really. Up whenever ,(by 7, they never-ending waking) toilet, wash, teeth all before going downstairs. Breakfast. I take clothes down abd they get dressed in front room (I have the steepest stairs known to man and started this when they were younger, might change it thus year).

If they have time they can watch TV before we leave.

Aftershock, I've found a small snack works better, then dinner 5.30/6. Some days it varies if clubs, although no actual school clubs. Swimming one day 4.15 so more substantial snack (cereal bar, and fruit)

Used to be upstairs at 6.30/7 (depending on if having bath) bed by 7.30but it's 7/7.30 and 8/8.30.

Had 3 in reception in the last 3 years and last year August born Dd:
up at 7.15-7.30am
breakfast
dressed, teeth & hair
play
cycle or walk to school leaving at 8.30
school starts at 8.50am ( siblings started earlier)
if no after school clubs collect at 3.05pm
cycle home.
snack depending on dinner
play/craft/park then spelling games or phonics sent home by school.
dinner5.30-6pm
play & shower at 6.45-7pm
reading & story bed at 7.30-7.45pm
One night she is later as she has gymnastics class.

everything out the night before, uniform, or kit, swimming stuff etc.

Bemyclementine · 04/09/2022 18:38

Oh we fit them reading in, well dc2 dc1 reads in bedto himself.

Yumchips · 04/09/2022 18:39

Thank you! We've lost all routine at the moment because of summer hols plus new baby. Waking up and sleep is all over the place. Determined to sort it all out and get my sanity back!

I'd move bedtime to before he gets home in that case. What time does he leave for work in the morning?

7am - wake, breakfast
7.30 - teeth, face, into uniform
8am - tv or toys/books
8.30 - set off

After school -
3.15 - collect, walk to a playpark
3.30-4 time at the park, maybe bring a banana
4 - walk home
4.15 - toys/games
5 - screentime while you prep dinner
5.30 - you and dd eat together (plate up for dh)
6-6.30 - bath
6.30 - into bed for a story

I'd look to incorporate dh into the morning routine. Dc will be exhausted so will need earlier nights this year.

UniversalTruth · 04/09/2022 18:44

In your scenario I would either do bedtime before DH gets home, or get ready for bed (pjyamas, brush teeth) and then DH comes straight in for longish story to calm everyone down.

GoodVibesHere · 04/09/2022 19:20

I don't think we had a routine just took 'em to school, collected from school.
