Manchester on a Sunday Night

Hi MNetters

DH and I have the opportunity to spend the night in Manchester in October ahead of a flight.

It'll be a Sunday night, and we'll likely stay near Piccadilly station for the airport train.

We've never stayed over in Manchester before so don't know where to start looking for a decent-ish restaurant and maybe a nice bar for a cocktail or a glass of wine before/after dinner on a Sunday.

All restaurant types considered, budget a bit flexible but probably not the Michelin star range. Preferably a safe night-time walking distance from the immediate area of the station, but we could Uber for something special.

Thanks Smile

Refuge at the Kimpton clock House Hotel does really good cocktails. Food is supposed to be good but never eaten there myself.
Gusto is nice for Italian food.
Manchester City centre is quite small and haven't every felt unsafe walking about at night though can jump on the tram ro save walking.

The Refuge, great food, cracking drinks menu and alway great service. About a 10-15min walk from Piccadilly.

The Northern Quarter (formerly known as Tib Street) is nearby and has lots of trendy eateries and bars (as opposed to the pet shops of old).

Dakota is lovely

Hotandbothereds · 04/09/2022 17:20

The Ivy in Spinningfields, and there’s a few nice bars near there too - it’s walkable or you could get the tram to St Peter’s square.

PauliesWalnuts · 04/09/2022 17:21

Tip - ring ahead to check people are open; there are a fair few restaurants in Mcr city centre which close after Sunday lunch.

badbaduncle · 04/09/2022 17:23

Manchester Blues Kitchen is fun for drinks and live music

Work2live · 04/09/2022 17:31

Yes, Dakota is fabulous. If you like steak, Hawksmoor is special. Both of these are on the pricier side.

We’re also planning a trip to Kala Bistro soon. I haven’t actually been, but it looks incredible.

It depends what kind of food you like and budget for hotels. Id stay in John st hotel or hotel gotham. Plenty of good "boutique" hotels but £££.

You are limiting yourself by staying near picadilly. I tend to taxi on a night out to move areas or walk the 20 mins across town.

Everyone raves about Dishoom for Indian food. Worth going there for a breakfast if not for dinner. Also 20 stories has a nice rooftop bar (good restaurant too but expensive). These are all more central and spinning fields way.

The Northern Quarter is quite buzzy. There's live music options and great cocktails. Its a but young and cool as an area.

The Ivy is totally soulless and nothing like the original but the Asian bit is nice.

I like a walk and a wander and look at the shops and get a coffee then more walk and end up on the other side of town, get dinner and then head elsewhere for drinks, taxi back.

ZenNudist · 04/09/2022 17:36

Also although Gusto is nice for Italian food it is a (naice) chain. I go there but that's because I usually park in spinningfields for free (near work) and I like the food.

If you like Italian the grand cafe piccolino is great but its opposite the town hall which is all under scaffolding for the next few years.

The Black Friar. It’s actually in Salford rather than right in the city centre but OM fucking G the food is amazing. Service brilliant. Manchester is really easy to get around so loads of brilliant places to then get drinks. Wash House, Dusk till Pawn, Abel and Heywood I can recommend

Battytwatty · 04/09/2022 17:39

agree with previous poster, swerve The Ivy. Loads of better places. I love Refuge too

QueSyrahSyrah · 04/09/2022 17:45

Thank you! Loads to consider and research Smile

So many brill places to eat in Manchester. But came on to recommend the refuge, like others have!

Mrspostitnote · 04/09/2022 18:41

There’s a few decent offers on wowcher for Sunday nights in Manchester in October might be worth a look there for a reasonably priced hotel .

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 04/09/2022 18:45

The trams are really good, so don't feel you need to eat near the hotel.

I really enjoyed Maray recently - sort of Middle Eastern-ish small plates and very good cocktails.

itsevolutionbaby · 04/09/2022 18:56

Lots of great suggestions. Erst in Ancoats is nice for dinner. Lots of bars and restaurants in that area, and a short walk from Piccadilly

BadGranny · 04/09/2022 19:09

This place - www.oneplusrestaurant.co.uk - is three restaurants, one on each floor. I highly recommend the first floor Chinese bbq.
