Painkillers not working

I had a tooth extracted on Friday afternoon. Since then the pain has been awful, even the strong cocodomal is barely touching it now. It seems to have clotted over well and I don't think it's infected? I've been rinsing with warm salt water 3-4 times a day too. Just sick of being in agony unable to sleep 😞

Do you have any Ibuprofen.Tooth pain is the worse pain.

I'm rotating cocodomal and ibuprofen but neither seems to be taking the pain away 😞

Try them together, I do as it's the only way I can manage the pain. We're you told only to take cocodamol for a max of 3 days.

Take them together No need to rotate. Just doesn't exceed maximum dosages

Crinkle77 · 04/09/2022 14:18

Are you sure it's not infected? I've never had pain that bad after an extraction.

Itsunlovelyinthegarden · 04/09/2022 14:41

Could you have dry socket? The pain of that is awful. Contact your dentist tomorrow and see if they can help.

I don't think so? I got my partner to have a look and he said that there is a clot over it.

I'd be contacting the dentist on Monday if it's still hurting so badly, to check that the ongoing pain doesn't mean there's some kind of problem. When I've had teeth extracted (albeit premolars as a tween, not anything bigger or as an adult) there was no real pain afterwards, just some local soreness after the anaesthetic wore off.

Is the cocodamol something they prescribed you because they anticipated you'd be in this much pain, or something you supplied yourself?

Kualma · 04/09/2022 15:08

I had this problem. Panadol really helped

Honeysuckle16 · 04/09/2022 15:31

I had this problem about a year ago after having a couple of teeth extracted. Sounds like you need to be seen by your dentist again as an emergency. In my case I had an infection although there was no inflammation and nothing to see on an X-ray. Two antibiotics sorted it out but it took a month before the pain subsided.

My new super-dentist who is doing implants for me, explained this can happen when a tiny fragment is left behind, too small to show on an X-ray. The body treats it as a foreign body and reacts against it. However, you may have a dry socket. In any case, expert help is needed.

Use Cocodamol, prescription strength (30/500) which is the best painkiller for you, plus ibuprofen. You can use it for longer than 3 days as long as your dentist oks that, then gradually reduce the medication as the pain goes. Salt water rinses and, if your dentist agrees, an antiseptic gel which the dentist will give you, also help. Use a hot water bottle and/or cold gel pack on your face.

The Cocodamol might give you constipation so drink orange juice and eat plenty of fruit. Best wishes.

Cocodamol does nothing for tooth pain, at all. You're better taking regular paracetamol with the stronger ibuprofen lysine together and repeat every 6 hours.

Cocodomal seems to be the only thing remotely touching it - I've been taking ibuprofen too and it isn't doing anything 😞

How strong a dose? You can take up to 800mg of ibuprofen safely. If you're only having the standard 200mg, I'd up it. Hell take it with cocodamol, they don't really interact.

The 400mg ones - they touch the pain for an hour or so then wear off 😞

I feel your pain...literally. I had a wisdom tooth removed on 25th Aug. It was traumatic. Dentist struggled to pull it. Anyhow, I'm still in pain, the whole of the outside of my gum is very swollen however the socket is healing very well. My gland in my neck is up and painful. I am gargling with salt like you numerous times a day. The medication helping with pain are 3 x 400mg of ibuprofen every 4 hours. I need to get back in to see dentist ASAP...however I have a family funeral tomorrow and a house move Tuesday so need to grin and bare it arrrrrgh. Feel better soon.

It's awful isn't it. The worst part is when the painkillers sfop working and having to wait to take some more! I called 111 today but all emergency dentists were at capacity so I'm going to ring my dentist in the morning.

I developed dry socket after wisdom tooth extraction. I will never forget the pain. Only prescription strength co codamol worked and it worked really well. As soon as GP opens get them to write you a prescription.

You are mistaken. Cocodamol is one of the few painkillers which is effective for dental pain. The.NHS website states:

“Co-codamol is a mixture of 2 different painkillers – paracetamol and codeine. It's used to treat aches and pains including headaches, muscular pain, migraines and toothache.”

Your personal experience may be different but this is not indicative of how the majority of people will react.

feliciabirthgiver · 04/09/2022 22:58

Paramol is my go to for dental pain (had 2 extractions recently, very sore the first few days, this really helped). Hope you feel better soon.

Try get some clove oil, soak a tiny bit of cotton wool with it and pack it into the gap. Don't dislodge the clot if there is one though. It was the only thing that helped with the pain when I had the same. X

I had laser eye surgery last week was in agony cocodamol controlled it well. You need to see dentist again
