If you have a smart meter, how much gas and electric does it say you use per day?

And do you find smart meters helpful for monitoring and cutting back on energy usage?

So my smart meter says today I have used 13p of gas and £1.88 of electric. I’m assuming standing charges are on top of that. Slightly scared by the electric usage (we’re still on a really old long term fix so no price rises here yet). But have had the washing machine on today, couple of showers, I think the dishwasher has been on earlier.

yes the smart meter makes me think about costs, so realised my plug in aromatherapy thing was 1p an hour, but that’s 24p a day which adds up over a month. So that’s off now. The dehumidifier costs about 4p an hour so only using this to help dry laundry now if not been able to dry outside, whereas it used to be on 24 hours. Decided will cope with a damp house instead by scrubbing the mould.

We've had a smart meter for a while, but the battery died not long after we got it so I've barely used it. I've charged it now though, and it seems we use between £2.50 and £3.50 a day. I will need to try and reduce our usage before the rise in October, so I'm hoping it's going to be useful for that. I work from home so it is going to be difficult to cut back too much though 😕

Well I’ve just realised something in DD’s bedroom which isn’t normally on is currently using 5p of electric an hour. So have started investigating, she’s on her computer but also is using her dressing table lights as room lighting and theres 6 big bulbs on. So I suspect it’s that, will investigate further tomorrow when she’s out and if it’s her dressing table will look at more energy efficient light bulbs.

Today electric is 80p so far and Gas 29p. These both include daily standing charge.
It just makes me aware and I try not to go over £1.25p Electric.
Im on a low fixed deal until Oct 23.

BuwchGochGota · 03/09/2022 21:13

I've used just over £3 today, but I've done a lot of baking so the oven has been on for a lot longer than usual. I've also done several loads of washing.

An average day at the moment, with no heating, is around £2/£2.50 per day.

I find the smart meter useful as it helps me pinpoint what is costing a lot (eg DD's long, hot showers!)

biddyboo · 03/09/2022 21:13

Our dishwasher is on twice per day (it's a small one), so I wonder if that's what is pushing our usage up.

Love tracking my usage on the smart meter but I am as tight as cramp and hate using gas n leccy, so it gives me great satisfaction to monitor it! It's currently about 60p a day gas and 80p elec, which includes the standing charge. No heating at the mo and the only elec I use daily is cctv, WiFi, phone charger and fridge.

Lochjeda · 03/09/2022 21:22

1.65 electricity used so far today and 93 pence gas. Haven't had oven or micro on. Haven't used the washing machine and don't have a tumble/dishwasher. 5 electric showers been used and the hobs only been used to make some ramen.

No TV, radio, showers, washing machine, lights etc?

We're averaging around £2.50 a day electricity (No gas). It's about £3.50/£4 when I have the tumble dryer on.

I go onto my new higher fixed rate in a couple of weeks. Dreading it!

ValBiro · 03/09/2022 21:27

Bloomin' heck we're using approx £5+ a day! Large dishwasher on twice a day and washing machine on a couple of times a day... Family of 5!

Lochjeda · 03/09/2022 21:27

Aw my husbands just said its not electric shower its gas we have. I need to look in to why my electrics so high then when I haven't used much electricity today.

Kezzie200 · 03/09/2022 21:32

Can someone with a smart meter on the current variable unit electric rate do me a favour?

I know it's a very rough estimate but I'm trying to work out..

What a minute of my hallway lighting might cost. We have LEDs but we have 6 of them come on at same time, like spotlights.

Anyone any idea?

Lochjeda · 03/09/2022 21:34

@ValBiro who you with? Id just wash your dishes by hand a couple of days and see what the difference is. We are a family of 5 but only need one load of washing a day done now as my kids are all older now and I don't do any on a Saturday.

Whats everyone elses weekly usage so far. Iv just looked and our weeks usage is 3.90 for gas and 11.02 electricity.

Our dishwasher uses almost a kwh for a quick wash, so that was almost 30p today. The other £3.42 ...one load of washing, two people using laptops and monitors for work all day, TV and lamps on in one room, two playstations and screens on elsewhere. 18p gas - I think we've all (four of us) had showers now and I've done a load of washing up.

NewBootsAndRanty · 03/09/2022 21:39

I worked out from my smart meter and going away for a couple of days that my fridge freezer has been eating 1.6kwh a day of electric- more than twice the amount it should (everything else was off at the plug).

The rest of my usage is low - lights/radio/phone charger/kettle and washing machine on eco .I have a tumble dryer but tend to not use it. A laundry day/air drying will be about 2.4kwh, otherwise it's averaging out at 1.9kwh/day.

Will be interesting to see what happens when the fridge freezer gets replaced...

Gas I'm using about 80kwh a month at the moment.

No TV, radio, showers, washing machine, lights etc?

Only watch the TV about 3 times a week for an hour or so. Not really my thing.
Forgot lights. Have got 1 small lamp on currently.
Radio on my phone maybe every other day.
Sink washes and it's warm still here, which is heating the water up enough for a shower.
Washing machine on once a week. Just me here at the mo. Socks n undies changed daily of course, tops and bottoms every other day, so one wash a week is easy.
Charged my electric bike battery today. From flat to full cost 10p 😀

Yabado · 03/09/2022 21:59

I’ve just had a smart meter installed a few months ago
we do have a hot tub so electric is a lot
but normal electric £3 a day
hot tub if we use it each day £3.50 -£4 a day depending on how many times we use it
I have the loop and Hugo app as well so can monitor usage from there

@Kezzie200 you can work this out fairly easily. What wattage are the lights? I've got a hall light with 5 x 5w candle bulbs. That's 25w or 0.025kw. So if the light is on for 1 hour, that's 0.025kwh.

My current tarrif is 29.5p per kwh, so the light for 1 hour's use costs me 0.025 x 29.5p = 0.74p ie under a penny.

By contrast, my kitchen lights are not LED, 5 bulbs each 20w, so 100w or 0.1kw. So an hour of kitchen lights costs me 2.95p. I'm currently militant about turning them off the second I leave the room! These would probably be worth replacing with LED now as with the price increase I'd recoup the cost in 3-4 months.

Kez200 · 03/09/2022 22:38

Fab thanks. I need to find out the wattage.
