Is this a crazy amount of electricity usage?

I’ve just done a meter reading and have used 3,711 units of electricity since 21st March?
Is this really high?

Cynderella we sound quite similar apart from the drying of clothes.

Why is the dishwasher going on twice a day? Are you filling it that often? Which would suggest a lot of cooked food, which might be a reason for the high electricity use.

If your oven is used a lot and is very inefficient, it could be part of the problem and might be worth reducing use, getting an air fryer is the current popular alternative.

You could use your smart meter or a plug in energy monitor to try and track down what is using a lot of electricity - they only cost a tenner or so.

Dishwasher only once a day OP. Cut down massively on the laundry.

Otherwise I shudder to think if the kind of bills you are going to get. Can you afford them? Could be £1000 pm at the rate you're burning through

Hugasauras · 03/09/2022 18:02

A full EV charge can be anywhere from 38khw-68ish IIRC. So it depends how much it's being used. If you're getting through a full charge a week, that's almost 2,000 units a year on its own. Obviously it can vary massively depending on car and usage.

Hugasauras · 03/09/2022 18:03

You should look at EV tariffs if you're coming off a fix. It'll dramatically reduce your charging bill and you can also have your appliances going during the cheap period too. It'll save you a lot,

NoWordForFluffy · 03/09/2022 18:05

We used 970 between 2 April and 1 July and another 600 between 1 July and 1 Sept.

We have an electric shower and use the oven a fair amount too.

FloppyFlippy · 03/09/2022 18:31

Thanks everyone, I’ll try and reduce the dishwasher load, although at the moment it really does get full twice a day six days a week.
I think with four adults in a lot we are using a great deal of everything. We’re trying to eat out less but obviously that means more meals in and more dishwasher etc.
Yes I do use my oven every evening normally for about 45 minutes. I tend to do the whole meal including veg in the oven so how I cook is something to think about.

This is the EV car usage.

We've used 5436.28 of electric since March.

finally somebody has used more than me.

We've used 1400 units since 3rd March.

3 bed detached. 2 residents. Electric cooking except hob which is gas. Don't use dishwasher or tumble. Washing machine, 2 fridges and a chest freezer. One TV. Normal electrical gadgets. Don't wfh.

We're four adults, but never have the dishwasher on twice a day unless I've done a lot of cooking. Sometimes, we miss a day. According to a recent MSE thread, washing up uses about ⅓ kwh and gas is cheaper than electricity, so I wash up big pans and bowls that aren't that dirty. I am trying to do just one load of washing up at the end of the day - there are too many things like chopping boards and knives that I always wash up by hand. By adding plates that have only been used for a sandwich or a pan that's been used for veg, it cuts back on dishwasher use.

FloppyFlippy · 03/09/2022 19:19

I am definitely doing something wrong as sometimes I can’t even fit all the evening meal stuff in the dishwasher.

Galliano · 03/09/2022 19:38

If you take off your electric car usage you’ve used just over 2000kwh which is far more normal usage. You obviously use the car quite a bit so I assume that although you’ve paid a lot for electricity for that it’s far less than you would have spent on petrol/diesel to do the same mileage.

lljkk · 03/09/2022 19:40

1529 kwH/yr for the car...
1529/7422 = 20.6%
5890 without the car

370kwh a year ... that's what, 5% of OP's total?
> 6% without the EV?
I never liked massive fridges. My dad who eats little has huge fridge-freezer for no good reason at all, fridge part is always half empty & freezer part as stuff in it that doesn't even need to be frozen. Now I get to snurk at the high amount people will pay to run them, I guess.

Ain't that the truth!

PrinceOfPegging · 03/09/2022 19:47

I’ve used 4000 units since mid March. Electric only home with heating, aircon, car charging and a hottub.

Caspianberg · 03/09/2022 19:58

We have used around 4000 so far this year.
When we bought the house 5 years ago they averaged around 10,000 per year, so we have decreased it a lot tbf.

Immersion boiler is electric and doesn’t turn off so that’s 24/7 - it’s just wired into mains. Being replaced next month. So all hot water is electric. But we have oil heating, also going.

Electric car now as well, but that’s recent.

luckily our kw is still pretty low atm (not uk)
