Which containers for batch cooking?

YellowBeetle · 03/09/2022 08:37

What does everyone store their batch cooking in? I did use freezer food storage bags for a while but I'm trying to reduce buying any single use plastics. I love the idea of having lots of meals cooked in advance and it would be good to hear how it works for other people storage wise. Thanks!

I use foil trays. I bought 100 cheap from Amazon

I use takeaway containers but I wash them. So they are more than single use. I also have Pyrex dishes with the plastic lids. There are always loads in TK max.

You can buy Pyrex with lids that can go in the freezer and straight in the oven. Perfect for things like shepherds pie and lasagne. You can’t do that with ordinary Pyrex.

I made soup yesterday as I had lots of left over veg and had nothing to freeze it in but glass jars. I’ve used them before and they work well but probably not the best for space saving in a freezer drawer.

Reuse your freezer bags - just give them a wash. I use ikea bags and smooth down the bags flat before freezing you can fit so much more in the freezer this way.

  • Takeaway containers
  • Ice cream containers
  • Ziplock bags (atm am using the ones that our ONS covid survey swabs come in!). Wash and reuse several times usually
  • Freezer & ovenproof crockery

For soup I use milk cartons. Takeaway and ice cream tubs for curry, chilli or pasta sauce. I have a few freezer-to-oven dishes for fish pie/cottage pie/fruit crumble etc.

Sealed Silicone Storage bags that you can stack & store flat in the freezer or fridge & can be reused. I use them for curries & pasta sauces. They're sold on Amazon in a mixed size box & fairly inexpensive. The only drawback is they can discolour slightly depending on the sauce.

Takeaway containers

For those making lasagna etc in Pyrex freezer to oven dishes, do you defrost first prior to cooking or bang it straight in the oven?

MinkyWinky · 03/09/2022 10:03

I use these from Lakeland www.lakeland.co.uk/15648/10-stack-a-boxes-food-storage-containers-400ml in different sizes. These are great for one adult portion of chilli, soups etc. I use smaller ones for sauce portioning for DD and bigger ones to store larger portions. I’ve had them for years and the stack really well!

I use takeaway containers. The food can be microwaved in them from frozen.
If running short of containers, I slip the frozen meals out and place them in poly bags. Also takes up less room in the freezer

YellowBeetle · 03/09/2022 11:19

Thank you for all the brilliant container ideas, I'm going to try a few of these Smile

steaight in the oven without defrosting

I bought some plastic containers from eBay 2 years ago, but over time some lids etc have broken. Would actually like to find something better ideally.

Milk cartons! @InsertPunHere that's genius level reusing!
I freeze milk regularly but had not thought of how useful the carton is.

The plastic tubs with lids that our occasional Chinese takeaway comes in. You can buy them for about a quid for ten.

Summertimesunshineandfizz · 03/09/2022 12:48

Takeaway containers, but I have some glass dishes with plastic lids from IKEA which are great as can both freeze and reheat in the oven in them

So do I, they're excellent and they stack

Tupperware style plastic containers, cheap supermarket ones. Washed and re-used countless times.
