Was I wrong?

After your opinions please as wonder if I'm being unintentionally rude.

Went out for dinner to a pub restaurant with two family members. Wiped my hands with an antibac wipe and left it on the table. It all kicked off how unpleasant it was that I had left a hand wipe on the table. I had no intention of leaving it on the table when finished, would have discarded it with my napkin. Had I wiped my nose and left a used tissue on the table, I agree, that would have been grim, so I wonder if I was being out of order. Would you have been annoyed?

You put the cutlery in your mouth and also left in on the table (well, on the plate). Maybe also wiped your mouth with the napkin.
A handwipe is nothing to get worked up about.

I don't think it's rude at all. No different than using a napkin.

Next time leave a pulled off toe hang nail on the side of your plate...

Surtsey · 02/09/2022 22:14

It's not you, it's them.

It is rude to criticise someone else's table manners.

How did you travel there - was it:

(a) Train or bus?
(b) Walking?
(c) A wholly electric motor vehicle?
(d) A 1997 diesel Landrover Defender?

Your answer to the above, when conjoined with your table wet-wipe protocols, will temper my response.

Also, what protein did you eat in your main course please?

Thank you, I was truly baffled and keep dwelling on it. Glad to know it's not deemed a cardinal sin among the masses!

I would have thought it was a very odd thing to do and wouldn't have liked it but I know that I'm probably being irrational.

It does seem different from a napkin - you wouldn't wipe your hands all over with a napkin and if you did, you wouldn't leave it on the table while people were eating.

Really?
Have you never been somewhere were you eat with your hands, and you get a bowl of lemon water to put your fingers in.. and a napkin to wipe them with, that you then leave on the table?
How is this different?

No, I haven't.

Well it does seem a little bit gritty to leave a dirty wipe on the table. It's not nice amongst the plates & glasses, and worse if there was a table cloth getting damp & dirty.

but it's even more rude to comment on other peoples table manners.

It's different for at least 2 reasons

  1. It's wiping off fresh water/food residue, not 'outside' dirt.
  2. a napkin is a large dry item that gets a bit damp, not a small wet cloth.
