I'm drying my washing in the greenhouse.

It's warm but wet where I am so I've a load of laundry on an airer in the greenhouse. I have no idea if this will work but it seems like a reasonable assumption. It's probably warmer than in the house and I hate washing in here.

Next I'm trying the shed and then the garage. Anyone else tried similar?

I often dry mine in the conservatory, even if it is wet it is often still quite warm in there

Whataplanker · 02/09/2022 17:33

I tried our garage. It didn't work! I think the greenhouse is a good idea. Even on cold winter days the sun can be quite warming.

AdoraBell · 02/09/2022 17:35

Genius idea. We don’t have a green house yet, and the shed is full to the rafters <looks sideways at DH>

Sounds good!

TheBeesKnee · 02/09/2022 17:36

Can you put a fan in for a bit of air flow?

Daftasabroom · 02/09/2022 17:36

We use our summerhouse (recycled double glazing units bought off eBay for £1 and a DIY timber frame) it works a treat.

Anon50000 · 02/09/2022 17:39

If I had a greenhouse I'd do this too. I have greenhouse envy.

Augend23 · 02/09/2022 17:39

Does the greenhouse have vents that can be opened? I imagine the issue would be how humid the air in the greenhouse gets, if there is one.

fairtrauchled · 02/09/2022 17:56

I put my dryer in the conservatory and the washing dries well.

EL8888 · 02/09/2022 17:59

My mum swears by this. She leaves the door open a little for ventilation

meateatingveggie · 02/09/2022 18:00

The roof vent opens if it gets above a certain temperature in there and I've left the door ajar for a bit of air flow. Even if it mostly dries and I finish it off in the house it will be better.

I might start doing this...although our greenhouse is full of spiders, ants, woodlice and various other little beasties.

CMOTDibbler · 02/09/2022 18:03

A chap round the corner from us has been doing it for years- their garden is all at the front so you see it- and it seems to work very well.

Surtsey · 02/09/2022 18:04

Jolly good idea. I have greenhouse envy too, although I do have a poky little potting shed. Hmmm...

Shodan · 02/09/2022 18:06

My mum used to hang her washing out under a 'lean to' affair- corrugated plastic sheets on a wooden frame. It wasn't pretty but worked quite well, with airflow from either end. I imagine a greenhouse would be even better?

Garage doesn't work, I've found. Not warm enough-although if it's attached to the house that may be warmer, possibly?

I've got a knackered conservatory that's supposed to be being demolished in October. I'll be drying my laundry in there until then.

Uptowntwirl · 02/09/2022 18:07

You know it's affecting the middle classes when people are drying clothes in their greenhouse

Crikeyblimey · 02/09/2022 18:08

My mum always had washing lines either in outbuildings / under the car-port / garage. Always opened a door / window to let air flow through (not car port obv, no ‘walls’). There’s no way she’d have kept on top of drying otherwise (5 kids and for a good while, no central heating / general frugality in all things).

our greenhouse is tiny but reckon I could get a maiden in there. Stupidly I hadn’t thought of that, so thanks.

YanTanTetheraPetheraPimp · 02/09/2022 18:15

I am definitely trying this once I clear the greenhouse of tomatoes etc.
Anything to try and save money!

KnottyKnitting · 02/09/2022 18:16

Just. Word of warning- I used to dry my washing in the conservatory and it created quite a lot of mould which was a real pain
To clean off the inside of the roof!

Notjustabrunette · 02/09/2022 18:26

Brilliant idea!

BMW6 · 02/09/2022 18:28

Make sure there's an airflow to prevent mould and clothes not drying

Shouldbeworkingnotreadingtalk · 02/09/2022 18:29

Polytunnel if that counts?

I'm drying my washing in the greenhouse.
loudbatperson · 02/09/2022 18:32

Greenhouses often have pretty high humidity, so the clothes may not dry well. If you can, have vents and the door open to get some airflow, or you will end up with stale, musty washing

Fennellathewitch · 02/09/2022 18:33

Not middle class here I've got two greenhouses they were free if we dismantled them and took them away. I might try this when it's too wet to put out on the line.......

thenightsky · 02/09/2022 18:35

Surprised a couple of PPs have said their garages don't work. Our garage is my go-to place for drying as it works sooo fast! Although the metal doors are south facing so heat up like radiators with the slightest ray of sun and the big gaps round the doors mean there's a breeze through most days.
