Sore, cracked corner of mouth

The left side of.my mouth has been cracked and peeling for about two weeks, other side fine. I've been liberally applying ointment all day and night but it's not getting better. No changes in diet or products, I'm a bit drooly in the night but sleep on both sides pretty equally I think? Clean pillowcases frequently.
Could it be fungal? I've been low carb for a year so no sugar and almost no sweet stuff (fruit etc), drinking loads of water.
It's very hot and sunny here, at first I wondered if it was sunburned but can't be that surely, I'm careful with sunscreen.
It feels like a paper cut, so annoying! Even slathered in ointment it gets sore when I eat.

Have you been feeling run down? I get this on both sides if I’ve not eaten properly, tired etc. I think in my case it’s a vitamin or mineral deficiency. Note me saying “my” case though. I do hope you heal up quickly.

Only a medical professional can diagnose you obviously, as you know ,and even if you get lots of posts from people saying they’ve had this and X worked or Y worked I’d still get it checked out if it doesn’t heal soon.

Have you got any Vaseline? That would give a protective barrier and help with any dryness. My DS get a very dry and sore mouth every winter but it’s caused by cold weather.

A pharmacist would be able to help. You might need an anti fungal/antibiotic cream which you can get over the counter.

ThisWormHasTurned · 02/09/2022 14:25

What ointment have you been applying? I get these and it turns out they can be a type of cold sore, so for me cold sore treatment sorts them out. But if it’s not healing I think that it’s worth getting a medical opinion.

I get this, its a B12 vitamin deficiency, I take some B vits for a week or so and it goes

TheYearOfSmallThings · 02/09/2022 14:27

I had this and someone told me to take more Vitamin B complex. I did so and the problem went away, but whether it was coincidence I don't know.

I had this a while ago and went to the pharmacy to get advice (which I recommend you do). I'd had it for ages and was driving me mad. In the end they told me to use Vaseline and actually that worked really well and it suddenly healed. I also read it can be a B vitamin deficiency so I started taking some B vitamins. Not sure if it made a difference. I reckon the Vaseline did most of the work

Sounds like you may have oral thrush!

I have this occasionally where both corners of my mouth crack are very sore and I resemble the Joker.🤣 However, there is normally some discomfort inside the mouth too with oral thrush but the cracked corners are a very regular symptom.

Best thing I have discovered for this is Nystatin but it is only available on prescription.

There is an over the counter ointment you can buy called Daktarin gel but this has never proved strong enough for me.

Unfortunately, if it is oral thrush, no other ointment will work. Believe me, I have tried everything in the past.

I get this when I need b12. It's the first sign that I'm ready for my injection.

Saladd0dger · 02/09/2022 14:29

Canesten cream will clear it up. I get it with low B vitamin decencies

DotBall · 02/09/2022 14:29

B vit supplement and Carmex lip balm in the little tin will probably sort it out.

Have at pictures of angular cheilitis online and see if it looks like that.

If it is it can be caused by various deficiencies so worth getting blood tests. I get it when my iron levels are low. If it is that until you work out the underlying cause, I find if I clean it with something quite drying, dry it well then immediately apply Vaseline, that keeps it at bay (though it'll keep recurring until the underlying cause is addressed).

Get some daktakort from the GP. I get fungal excema around my mouth and get the cracks. I use daktakort plus hydrocortisone and I switched to sensodyne daily (pale green lid) and the cracks went.

Wow that was quick, thanks for replies, will see if there's anything I haven't tried.
Currently using (constantly) an ointment that my mum was recommended in hospital when she was having radiation, fancy French Vaseline for all intents and purposes. I've added some antibac ointment this morning to see if it helps.
No thrush symptoms in mouth or elsewhere. I do have lichen planus but so far not in my mouth, dunno if I'd get that anywhere else?
Not run down as such but long-term staying with my elderly mum far from home so not in peak condition either. I'm booked for a blood test for something else so will ask if they'll test vitamin b. I usually do self injections but haven't while away. I have some oral spray which I take alongside vitamin d but being in the sunshine so much I've let the d slide and forgotten about the b, will start again.
Thanks again Smile
