newborn grobags...

Due a winter baby and I'm looking for a grobag for when they are 0-3 months, but all the ones we can see are giant! They also say "make sure they cant slip below the shoulders"...but a tiny baby will easily slip down in these things. Also there will be loads of fabric at the bottom so how do you do feet to foot? I dont want the worry and faff of a big blanket in the night either...am I missing something? What did you do?

I also had a December baby and he was a tiny dot we used gro snugs which were the perfect mix between swaddling and a gro bag.

We used gro snugs too - perfect for the first 6 weeks or so.

I had a swaddle blanket from Jojo. It had elephants on. He looked like an adorable little sausage.

The grobag should have a fastening under the arms to prevent it slipping up over their head.

If there’s extra fabric, just fold it up at the foot of the cot. Babies grow so fast, ours was growing 1cm a week for the first few months.

I love a grobag!

My understanding is that "feet to foot" is so that they don't wriggle down under a blanket. That's not a risk in a bag so I don't think it's a problem. You can always just scrunch/roll the bottom of the bag though and put it just below their feet at the end of the crib.

For the size, our ones have a minimum weight on them which gives you an idea. Ours are 8lb minimum I think so we couldn't have used them straight from birth - we actually used a gro snug bag anyway from birth, then moved to a 0-6 month bag.

JenniferBarkley · 02/09/2022 09:00

Ours were big babies and never went below the weight limit for the 0-6 month grobags. It's the weight you need to worry about. Didn't worry about feet to foot with sleeping bags as there's no blanket for them to slip under.

Newborns don't actually fit the growbags generally. I used a grosnug and a 'love to dream swaddle me up'. My sons were both nearly 3m before they fitted the 0-6 growbags!

You don't need to worry about feet to foot when using grobags. That advice is only to stop them slipping under a blanket. Grobags should have a popper button under the arms, which should help prevent it slipping up over their head when they wriggle. I found 0-6m grobags far to big for a newborn though, we didn't start using them until around 3 months. Before that we used swaddle bags, but the ones where you can have their arms out.

It’s the neck hole you need to be worried about. Extra length is fine, and totally normal since they have a pretty lengthy age range especially once you move up through the sizes! I’d also really rate the Gro Snuggle Swaddle bag- the arms have poppers so you can use it as a swaddle with arms in or a conventional sleeping bag. It is also suitable from 7lbs so should be ok for a full term baby but tbh I found it came up even smaller than the chart indicated. DS was 8lb3 at birth and lasted about 2 weeks in the 0-3 months before we had to size up, despite it saying it was for 7-13lbs.

SalviaOfficinalis · 02/09/2022 09:14

Some have an extra arm hole popper so you can make the arm holes tighter - means it can’t go over the head. But even so, they’ll be too big for a new baby.

Long sleeved baby grow and vest with blanket will be fine at first. Sleeping bags will be more useful when the baby is older and more wriggly.

Feet to foot is only with blankets.

Decafflatteplease · 02/09/2022 09:15

Grosnug is what you need. Game changer!

Decafflatteplease · 02/09/2022 09:15

We got ours from boots I think from memory around £20, probably more now of course!

Thanks everyone. Can someone tell me why feet to foot is only with blankets?

Because baby could quite easily wriggle under a blanket if not at the foot of the cot. In a grobag that fits properly, their head can't slip under it, so no need for them to be at the foot of the cot.

AliceAbsolum · 02/09/2022 20:45

Ahh of course. Thanks

We got snuz ones. They say not suitable for babies under 9lbs i think. Double check. I did blanket until then and she's loved her snuz grobag ever since. Has extra snaps in the arms for while she was little so it stayed put and didnt shuffle up to high round her neck.
