Creepy TV show/advert from early 90s ish - anyone know what I'm taking about?

Some roadworks today made me have a flashback to something that was on TV - I think quite frequently - when I was quite young. So I'm going to guess around early 90s?

I think** it was an advert but could be wrong. Or could have been a "be careful" sort of an ad.

It really used to scare me/make me uneasy and although I can't remember much of it I can remember the scared feeling it gave me.

So it was daytime on a standard British high street and there was a little sort of road works tent. My head is making me think the tent thing was red and white?

It could've been maybe for gas works or something?

Also linked to it in my head is the creepy 'end of transmission' little girl and clown screen that would come on. But then being linked in my brain doesn't mean they are.

Hopefully some of that makes sense to someone!

This rings a bell with me too. I’ll probably wake at 3am and remember what it is.

VirginiaWool · 01/09/2022 23:22

It's ringing a bell for me as well. Frustrating!

I vaguely remember an advert with the stripy tent, a barbie doll with fur coat on and possibly an action man. I think it was an advert for the Early Learning Centre and the idea was something like Barbie and AM were digging down to tunnel their way into the ELC (under cover of the tent) as that was the only way that type of toy would be allowed in the ELC? I could be completely wrong though and it's probably not what you were thinking off...

RiftGibbon · 01/09/2022 23:29

Don't know why but it made me think of an advert for milk. Possibly one of those things where the adverts were on at a similar time.

For several years, I was convinced that the girl on the test card was me. We had similar hair.

Aah you beat me to it! I started typing that before the last post but multitasking so took ages to type!

I don’t know why but the theme music to tales of the unexpected always spooked me when I was little.

TurquoiseDreamCatcher · 02/09/2022 01:05

An advert for liquorice all sorts? Featuring Chris Tarant? Be careful or you might turn into Bertie Bassett.

HeechulOppa · 02/09/2022 01:08

As a side note, Kenny Everett was the voice of Charley the cat

ILV · 02/09/2022 01:12

I love that fact @HeechulOppa . Thanks!

Sweetpea84 · 02/09/2022 01:16

Does anybody remember an advert the Royal Mail for d day stamps and there was a helmet on the beach? Am I going mad because I remember being scared by it and couldn’t watch it 😂

Strange those little tent things weren't they?

I remember the Newman and Baddiel sketch-

You know when you see roadworks, and there's a small stripy tent in the middle of the road?

I have seen such things yes

That's your house, that is

Stripy red and white straws and the phrase "watch out there's - Humphrey about " (or something 😂)
Strange marketing for milk but it was very popular!

Caminante · 02/09/2022 02:09

Humphrey ad

sashh · 02/09/2022 03:36

I inherited a cat from a neighbour, he had been a stray that turned up at their flat and yowled through the door at their existing cat.

Because he was so vocal he was called Charlie.

This one?

Aahhh it maybe must have been?!

Because it would also totally answer why I also link it with the girl with the clown (even though in this ad it's a girl with a doll but too similar)

I wonder why I didn't like it.

I used to have a Charlie cat, named for that same reason.

@RiftGibbon

Aw, cats are the best.

He was a tuxedo and would sit on the front door step like a Mini fuzzy club bouncer.
