How many pinafores/skirts does she need?

This is a uniform question for an uninitiated parent. How many pinafores/skirts does my daughter need for reception? I've bought two, along with half a dozen polos. I'll be doing her laundry every other day. She's quite careful and neat by nature, but not sure if schools gonna be carnage!

Thank you 😊

If you’re doing laundry every other day then two is fine.

Quornflakegirl · 01/09/2022 19:45

In reception mine had two pinafores and it was sufficient. Now that they have PE twice a week and wear PE kit to school they have just one skirt each. My girls aren’t particularly mucky so we got away with minimal uniform.

DS had two pairs of shorts/trousers and five polos. I did washing once or twice a week.

One. Plus trousers and shirt for days it's not clean.

Thanks for the replies. I should clarify we don't have a tumble drier so everything is line dried and not immediately available after washing. Does that change things??

Trousers dry inside on the bannister overnight and I don't use a lot of heating either. Are skirts the same fabric?

Dinoteeth · 01/09/2022 19:50

Op I'd have 3 one on, one in wash, one clean

millefeuille2 · 01/09/2022 19:50

I've gone for cotton or cotton mix. In winter, won't dry overnight unless on the radiator I think.

DS would typically wear shorts or trousers for two or three days at that age.

MinervaTerrathorn · 01/09/2022 19:51

You can also spot clean if needed

millefeuille2 · 01/09/2022 19:51

Another factor - sorry for drip feed - she has forest school. I'm not sure how often, could be weekly or fortnightly.

I’d have more than two, you’ve not factored in accidents (reception is too fun to stop for a wee!), and forest school can be gloriously muddy if it has been wet, plus the day you forget to put the washing on will definitely coincide with the muddiest paintiest week at school!

MissRainbowBrite · 01/09/2022 19:59

I'd go for 3, wash, wear and spare. School pinafores are best for that age, easier than skirts but being full coverage they take the brunt of any messes meaning the polo shirts stay cleaner. A pinafore will usually dry overnight if you hang it on a clothes hanger.

millefeuille2 · 01/09/2022 20:03

Haha maybe I've done it the wrong round - too many polos and not enough pinafores!

I also have no idea how hot/cold schools are inside these days. I remember it being quite chilly when I was little, but that was a different part of the UK and also err 30 years ago. I've bought a mix of short and long sleeve polos to wear inside pinafore and cardigan. Hoping that's sufficient!

Is she allowed trousers? They'd be better for forest school I'd think

TheRookie · 01/09/2022 20:08

I would have 3 if I were you, one always spare in the wardrobe in case of emergencies! I definitely would have a polo shirt for each day as well, I can't be arsed with the stress of making sure there are enough!

PuttingDownRoots · 01/09/2022 20:16

Is it the Teflon type material or Jersey material?

The Teflon type stuff dries really quickly.

Notjustabrunette · 01/09/2022 20:21

How about start with two and if you need more, buy more. Or get two pinafores and two skirts as there will be times of the year when pinafores will be too hot.

Darkness22 · 01/09/2022 20:22

I'd go for 3, assuming wearing pe kit to school on 2 days.

CoffeeWithCheese · 01/09/2022 20:23

DD1 I used to buy a couple of pinafores and a couple of pairs of trousers (the contrary buggers always go for whichever bottom option they claim they don't want and I buy less of) - now it's just a couple of skirts and a pair of trousers... and whatever other ones she's not grown out of yet.

DD2... millions of the buggers - she accessorises everything with yoghurt, is a muck magnet and manages to lose her uniform regularly.

bigskydeepsea · 01/09/2022 20:42

We do 1 pinafore, 1 skirt, 2 pairs of trousers

Randomuser9876 · 01/09/2022 20:57

I never get too stressed about uniform in September and get minimal stuff as if you need more you just get more surely? I tried to time it so I'd not get more til they needed the next size and then phase stuff in or out!

I'd say 3 skirts ideally but you'll be fine with 2. They dry overnight if an emergency. My girls would last a week in 1 skirt as had PE 2 days.

millefeuille2 · 01/09/2022 21:42

Thanks all. I'll hold back until a week or two in!

Mammyloveswine · 01/09/2022 22:22

I have boys...4 pairs of trousers, 4 t-shirts, 4 jumpers each... plus pe kit they wear once a week.

So I just do one wash and iron of uniforms each weekend.

I work full time so need it to be easy to keep on top of.

I also only buy grey school socks so im not fannying on pairing socks!

Another tip...pick up cheap spare school shoes in case shoes get soaked/muddy etc and need to be cleaned and dried (I picked up a pair in the charity shop today for £3).

Don't underestimate the state school uniforms get in 😂

SoftSheen · 01/09/2022 22:26

I would get at least 3. Mine generally needed a complete change of clothes every day in nursery and reception- if it's not mud, it's paint, food or bodily fluids!
