My trusty hot water bottle ( I sleep with it tucked behind me .. arthritis) just burst... freshly filled from the kettle. My elbow and arm is burned and blistering. My hip too though not as badly.
I'm sitting with my left arm in a washing up bowl of cool water.. agony if I take it out.
I'll go to minor injuries in the morning, but it's closed now and I can;t face a night in A+E (plus DH fast asleep and I can't drive like this)
Other than cold water and ibruprophen, is there anything I can do? Shall I try to cover the burns?

You need running water, for at least 20 minutes and not too cold, and then the NHS sites says to cover with cling film.

Fluffyfluffflufffluff · 01/09/2022 00:54

Oh no, I had this and remember the pain vividly. So sorry you're experiencing it. Mine burst all over my stomach. I took a cool shower pronto, kept it in cold water for as long as I could stand it. Used cool flannels. Ordered burn cream and aloe vera gel and applied liberally.

It healed within a few weeks and was gone in a couple of months. Enjoy the itching 😬

Oh cripes, poor you. No further advice, pp's sounds good, but much sympathy Flowers

A&E tonight would be preferable...

  • Does it encircle the whole arm?
  • Does it cover more than the size of the palm of your hand?

If either of those are yes, you shouldn't wait till morning.

And what spiderlight says. No creams or oils or anything, and no fabric dressings.

Justyouwaitandseeagain · 01/09/2022 00:57

You need to wake your Husband. Constant cold running Water for as long as possible but I think it I suppose to be hospital for any burn bigger than your hand.

pnutter · 01/09/2022 00:58

Running water
Wake up DH
Go to hospital
Burns are serious !

EBearhug · 01/09/2022 00:58

In a case like this you can wake your husband.

DramaAlpaca · 01/09/2022 01:07

I agree. On reflection, I think you should wake your husband.

StillMedusa · 01/09/2022 01:11

Dh is an HGV driver and due in work in 2 hours, so not fair to wake him...plus our adult autistic son can't be left, so I have to manage til tomorrow.
Burn is about 6 inches long..one open 2 inch blister where my skin came straight off the rest just red and tiny blisters. I.ve taken painkillers .I think I can wait til morning but bloody hell the pain! Not sure howI am going to lie down!

Running water is a must it takes the heat out..or you continue burning , I know this from experience, I'm badly scarred
If dh is up in two hours you can wake him up to drop you to hospital surely , it's an emergency

HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime · 01/09/2022 01:19

Once youve done the cold water thing and taken the initial heat out of the burn you need to wrap it with cling film, the cling film wont get bits stuck in the burn like a normal fabric and prevents the air getting to it which causes the pain. You can then put it back in the cold water or lay a cold, sodden flannel over the top of the cling film, rewetting it regularly.

Do not apply any ointment to it or put any fluffy cloths / bandages over the top.

When my mum knocked a freshly made tea all over her chest when she was in the bath this is what A&E recommended.

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 01/09/2022 01:20

That's a big burn. Your husband does long distance?

You think you can manage an autistic adult while you are in severe pain?

Are you kidding?

TheChosenTwo · 01/09/2022 01:26

Ouchhhhh 😳
you poor thing, what a crappy accident.
I think you should try and get it seen to asap, I don’t have any knowledge of burns other than a few things which have seen already posted here so I’m just here to send you a lot of sympathy 💐

StillMedusa · 01/09/2022 01:29

DS2 isn't difficult... he's a lovely lad. But I wouldn't leave him alone all night.. he's anxious and wouldn't notice if the house burned down around him ! I just need to manage it til the morning. Might ring 111 tho as I think I have to get an appointment these days :/

How are you this morning, @StillMedusa ? I hope you've been seen now and had it properly treated. If I'd realised how big it was, I would have joined the chorus last night telling you to go to hospital, although I can see how difficult it would have been.

StillMedusa · 01/09/2022 11:53

All patched up now thank you... went to minor injuries this morning.
Having wrapped it in clingfilm all night it wasn't quite as painful this morning bu did need dressing so all good. Buggers my plans for going paddleboarding tomorrow tho !!!

Glad you've been seen and had it dressed properly.
