At what age do you give an adult dose of paracetamol..

My ds is 15 and 4 months. He towers above me is broader. He has a temperature and is unwell headache etc.. tested negative for covid i have given him one paracetamol at 1 but seems odd given his size seems madness he takes a smaller dose than me.

I’m a girly swot so I’ve used dose by weight since mine were newborns. Is he ‘adult size’?

Yes that's mad. Definitely an adult dose.

It's almost an adult dose. 750mg is one and a half normal tablets.

Pretty sure on the box it says age 12.
At work we have 50kg as our cut off.
So from your description I’d definitely be giving him 2 x 500mg tablets.

Snowdropsarelovely · 31/08/2022 21:32

The ages are more of a guideline, it actually goes on weight and I'm absolutely certain describe it would be okay to have two paracetamol! I think the actual dose for his age group is 1.5
When my slightly younger very petite daughter fractured her wrist recently the hospital weighed her and gave her 2 tablets

Starlightstarbright1 · 31/08/2022 21:33

Thank you..

Yes he is 5ft 10.. I just worried if i was missing a reason

No, I think they are just cautious in case of overdoses

AdelaideRo · 31/08/2022 21:35

Over 50kg dose is 1g (so 2 normal tablets) orally and IV.

DOI: anaesthetist.

Owlnoises · 31/08/2022 21:37

I've been taking 2 since I was about 11/12 or so. And I had undiagnosed endometriosis for 18 years so took a hell of a lot. Last time I was in hospital they said I could only have 1 because of my weight Confused. News to me!

I seem to remember they said it was something like 50kg for taking 2?

Owlnoises · 31/08/2022 21:38

Ah, I see others have said 50kg while I was typing

Starlightstarbright1 · 31/08/2022 21:39

I have just asked him he said he is just over 60 kg.

Google paracetamol by weight and calculate it accurately.

I've always given paracetamol by weight.

My son is a lofty 6 foot six and heavy. But he's a mid teen so would be on a reduced amount according to the box.

My mum is just 4 foot10. She's tiny but can take a full adult dose according to the packet!

Doctors usually calculate meds by weight. It's more accurate.

TooMinty · 31/08/2022 21:48

If it's 50kg for an adult dose then I've been over dosing myself for 30 years! I think there must be leeway built in/margin of error. I'd definitely give him a full dose, hope he feels better soon!

WishDragon · 31/08/2022 21:57

At that age I would give 2.
