Eating out of control

Moneymoneymoney1979 · 31/08/2022 19:46

My eating is horrifically out of control and I don't seem to be able to stop.
Today I ate:
Breakfast - 2 pieces of toast with tons of real butter. 2 Christmas mince pies (flipping Morrisons and their early Xmas stuff).
Lunch - chocolate
Tea - 2 more pieces of toast with lots of butter.
Drinks: large glass of squash and 3 cans of pepsi max.

So literally no fruit or veg and not even any water. I'd love to say this was a one off but it's just not.

I can't keep going like this.

You know you need.to eat better

You should probably start with having proper meals and better food in the house (if shit isn't there, you can't eat it)

Good luck

It's beyond being that easy. This has been years.

You need to get to the bottom of why you are eating like this. Is it an emotional response to something that's wrong in your life? I ask because your diet is heavy in traditional comfort foods.

I agree with pp that some of this stuff doesn't need to be in the house - the mince pies and chocolate, for example.

TheScenicWay · 31/08/2022 19:52

What would your ideal realistic diet look like?

Afterfire · 31/08/2022 19:54

Why don’t you think you deserve to eat better?

Single forever, lonely, lived alone for decades, can't have kids and quite low.

Are there other people in your home - who does the shopping, cooking etc? What do they eat? If you live alone, do you only eat like this at home - what about when you go out to eat, have visitors or are at work? Is there some 'normal eating' in your life?

hobbledyhoy · 31/08/2022 19:56

I think that it may be that what you are eating is spiking your insulin levels and therefore making you hungrier so it's a vicious cycle. If you're hungry stick to high protein, high fats that sate your hunger and will help quell hunger pangs

I don't know but probably
Breakfast - cereal
Lunch - spag bol filled with veg
Tea - soup

That's hard - single, living on your own and no kids can be great if that's a life choice, but it doesn't sound as if it is.

Very little normal eating

"Breakfast - cereal

Tea - soup"

What's stopping you sticking to that tomorrow?

Years of disordered eating I guess

Maybe start with getting in some cereal and milk (maybe some fruit) and telling yourself that every morning, you will have a bowl of cereal and a banana or apple or whatever, and that you'll try to drink a glass of water at lunchtime. Baby steps.

That's a good idea. Thank you for not judging me.

It’s probably the carby cereal triggering the rest of the days eating also
have a really good healthy large meal with tonnes of veg and protein try no carbs or a few ie no pasta etc and that may make you feel able to start the next day better then have fruit /eggs / fewer carbs at breakfast
I’ve been feeling better drinking green juice watered down my eating has been horrendous I’m a sugar addict

paulmccartneysbagel · 31/08/2022 20:16

I agree with cynderella, baby steps. Don't try to change everything all at once. Start with one thing - whether it is a mea, or drinking more water, or having a piece of fruit or veg with a meal.

JubileeTissues · 31/08/2022 20:19

Do you like eggs? If so replace the toast at breakfast with an omelette.

Replace just one of the fizzy drinks with water, or fizzy water even? Then try and build it up but no faster than a week at a time. Gradual changes

Inca22 · 31/08/2022 20:19

Hi OP. Don't beat yourself up about it. I eat really badly when the family isn't around - kind of hard to bother to cook a spag Bol for one! Toast and butter will always be in your home - and my guess is you're going for that because it's easier?

So why not cook a spag Bol and then portion out the left overs and pop in the freezer. Do this for your soup and any other ideal meal you'd like. Then it'll be much easier to eat more healthily and you'll have a freezer full of choices.

Good luck and look after yourself xx

I'm sorry you're feeling low.

Living alone does mean you can control what food comes into the house - you don't have to deal with the temptation of unhealthy foods others might insist on having in the cupboards.

I agree with the suggestion of small steps, gradually introducing more healthy foods into your day. Build up to your 'five a day' gradually.

I would also suggest, if it's at all possible, doing your shopping when you are not hungry, so you aren't tempted to buy foods you don't need, such as the mince pies. Make a shopping list and stick to it - try to order the list in the same order you go round the supermarket so you aren't going back and forth past enticing displays, which is what supermarkets rely on.

You mention soup - do you have a soup maker or stick blender? Making your own soups exactly to your taste is a real incentive to eating more soup and you can blend in lots of vegetables as an easy way to get your 'five a day'.

You basically ate 4 slices of toast 2 mince pies and chocolate. I think most people would actually be a bit hungry on that. Yeah the food isn’t great but you aren’t actually eating much either. I do get the feeling of whats the point of going to a lot of effort when you are living by yourself (I lived on samdwichs) but it’s a small thing you can do for yourself. I wouldn’t necessarily stop trying to eat chocolate or whatever but just promise yourself a few good meals in the day.

Can you make a tuna or chicken sandwich or wrap for lunch? Just get some protein in you.

I’m sorry you sound really sad 💐

Antarcticant · 31/08/2022 20:32

Brilliant. Why not look online for some soup recipes to give you ideas? You can make enough soup for two or three portions and freeze some each time so you've then got something healthy you can whip out of the freezer and quickly microwave if you are tempted to snack.

Sally99 · 31/08/2022 20:34

OP I can't offer help but just want to send you a Flowers and say that food has a lot to answer to. I'm not good with it either and if I knew the answer I'd share it with you .

I was where you are. I had this ideal version of what I should be like with my eating, my lifestyle and my appearance and comparing the reality to my ideal was so vast it was overwhelming.

Years of yoyo dieting led me to a binge eating disorder where I would stop off at the shop on the way home from work, and buy utter shit and then hide the packaging from my DH.

Eventually I got help and the first step was a binge eating support programme for 20 weeks. I hoped that would cure me, and it did stop the binges but it's taken a lot lot longer for my eating habits to morph into sensible and anywhere near healthy.

The last year I focused on lunches. That's all. That small change put me in a much better headrace and I felt able to start exercising. This year my focus is on dinner times.

I follow rebelfit on Facebook who talks a lot of sense, and I have started to celebrate who I am at this moment in time.
