Is there a solution to this printer issue that I have missed?

There are two types of people in the world, those like DH who wait until the petrol tank light comes on before filling it and those like me who fill it when it goes below half full. (OK, so there is actually a spectrum of when people fill their tank, but that doesn't suit my point.)

Same applies to the printer in our study. It's on DH's desk facing towards a wall (DH's desk faces outwards) so I can't see the display. DH does about 98% of all the printing and photocopying in the family so I would look at the display when I use it but that's generally only every six-eight weeks or so. The thing is that DH won't order ink for it. He waits until it goes low, then he waits a bit longer until things are not coming out the right colour because there's none at all left of one of the colours, then he waits a bit longer until sheets are coming out with blank bits. That's when he orders ink, which takes three or four days to arrive. And then he gets all frantic because he needs to photocopy something important or print out a boarding card or something. He can be a bit of a scrooge about some inconsequential things, so I think this pattern of usage is to do with feeling that ink is a rip-off (which it is), whatever the cause is he's not going to change, don't think I haven't tried.

Most of my printing is quilt patterns, so not at all urgent, and I have been going to the local copy shop and having them printed there. It costs quite a bit, over €13 for 37 pages last time, but the quality is lovely and when there is a picture of a blue piece of fabric being sewn to a peach piece of fabric they are actually blue and peach not two shades of lavender. It's a bit of a pain though because the shop is out of my way and even though I email it to them first they never have it ready and I have to hang around for it.

The real issue is when the DC need something printed out for school. They invariably need to print in colour, after the time the copy shop has closed and need to hand it in the next day. It's also usually when DH is out for the evening, like today, so I bear the brunt of their frustration.

So my choices as far as I can see them are

  1. to have my own printer and not let DH use it (because otherwise he will run out of ink on his and then use mine until it runs out of ink too), but that seems a bit over the top when I probably print a total of 100 pages a year at the very most.
  2. order spare ink but not tell him that I have it so that I can change the ink if necessary when the DC or I need to print something, but that's also a pain because I will need to change back to the old ink afterwards so that Scrooge McPrinty can use up every last drop before throwing it away. It also turns me into his office manager who will be blamed if he runs out of ink because it has become my job.

Any simple, obvious solution that I've overlooked?

Oh, and the printer itself is a total bastard. It's always pretending it can't see my computer over the wi-fi and then does an update taking 5 minutes before it will print anything, faintly, in lavender.

I don't know what kind of printer you have OP, but we are on this scheme - HP Instant Ink - a monthly payment where you set how many pages max. you'll print a month (you can rollover some too), and they remotely monitor your printer and send you ink before yours finishes so you always have ink before it runs out:-

It is a HP, but he won't do the auto delivery because it's a 'rip-off'.

monroedoubter · 31/08/2022 17:48

Oh I don't think it is! Once you add up the cost of the ink and you spending ££ printing elsewhere, I bet its cheaper! And you set the level that suits your family.

CrapBucket · 31/08/2022 17:51

Option 3. Buy a set of printer inks for a nearby friend who doesn't mind you emailing the kids homework to them every now and again?

Phineyj · 31/08/2022 17:53

Work out how often it needs replacing and set up an Amazon delivery for within that time period.

And tell DH to stop being a wally!

We do this also. It’s wonderful. We always have ink. Life is considerably easier!

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 31/08/2022 17:55

Also, when I order the ink myself (which I'm doing now) I pay for it. When DH orders it I'm pretty sure that he puts it on the company credit card because the usage is almost all work related.

OP posts:
Talipesmum · 31/08/2022 17:59

Or, order plenty of backups. Put the new cartridge in when the old one is getting low. When he wants to use it he can put the old one back in again.
or just bin the old cartridge (or post them back for recycling or whatever you do).

actually having your own printer isn’t a bad idea. Printers are really cheap - it’s the ink that’s pricy. You could set your own one up with the instant ink. So if he uses yours he’s using the rip-off ink.

Augend23 · 31/08/2022 18:02

HP instant ink is really very convenient. It may well be a rip off but it's cheaper than the print shops. Would your husband's work accept him expensing that maybe? If he puts it on the company credit card, why does he feel like it's ripping him off?

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 31/08/2022 18:03

I've been married to him for over 30 years and for as long as there have been home printers he has behaved this way, except for the few years when I worked at home for part of the week and therefore I ordered the ink and was the major user. Everybody has a weirdness, this is his, he is otherwise fairly normal. He won't change.

He's not even a mean person, when I was buying a new car the one I liked best was about 30% above my notional budget and he just said "If you like it, buy it". It's just printer ink that he has a thing about, and he's totally irrational about it and I have pointed out the inconsistency, nagged and argued and nothing has changed it. So now I try to work around it. I mean, a complete set of ink is around €50, which is less than we pay for a take away, and we have a take away/go out to eat whenever the fancy takes us without thinking about it. It's not as though this is a major expenditure, he just WON'T change the ink until it has run out completely.

Whataplanker · 31/08/2022 18:03

Get him to order an extra set just once. Then when the once that is currently in runs out, order another set so, yes, he has the outlay of ordering double one time but then you always have a spare from now on.

This is exactly how I do things, when I open my last of anything like kitchen foil, loo rolls, ketchup, whatever, that's when I buy the next one. So I have one in use and one waiting to be used. Even he does that when he does the shopping, opens the last of something and puts it on the list. Don't think I haven't suggested it to him. He just WON'T.

  1. Kill him.
  2. Throw out all of his stuff.
  3. Get a Canon AIO and buy generic cartridges cheap on Amazon.
hth
BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 31/08/2022 18:11

Anyway, there is a full set of ink winging its way to me now. And Shock it's the HP branded stuff, not the 20% cheaper generic stuff that needs a lot of fiddling and swearing to make it work properly. Grin

OP posts:
BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 31/08/2022 18:13

We had a Canon before swimlyn, it was less fussy about generic than the HP but he still wouldn't flipping order the ink. It was also a bastard about the wifi and I had to run a cable across the room to it to make it print from my computer.

OP posts:
BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 31/08/2022 18:19

Also, I'm mostly fond of him, I will hold off on the killing him part until he does something really bad, like drinking Guinness and then farting in bed.

Check what the printing set up is at DC school? When mine were at secondary school, each child had a certain amount of printing credit they could use and could top it up with more if they needed. Mine had a GCSE with a lot of colour printing so regularly had to buy the top up but it was pence.

I stopped having a home printer when I realised I only used it for work things and DC schoolwork. So now it’s work things printed at work only.

Clymene · 31/08/2022 18:23

Doesn't your printer tell your computer when it's short of ink? It should do. So you should just order it then.

Honestly, it's a printer for the family. Take control

You're right, sorry about that.

If you want something a bit more techy, I'm torn between two cars. I really want either an ID Buzz or the new electric Fiat 500. The Buzz is overpriced and bigger than I need and will probably be a bit of a nightmare in multi-story car parks. The Fiat 500 doesn't have have a long enough range for a journey that I do about six times a year, so I would have to stop at least once, probably twice, to recharge. It's also not big enough to take the dog crate in the boot and is a bit tight in the back for my older teens. I had a petrol 500 a few years ago and it was great fun to drive.

They are both very cute, which is not the right reason to buy a car but has often been the better choice for me in the past. I get bored with 'sensible' very quickly.

If you’re getting a printer then an Epson eco tank. I’ve JUST replaced the black ink after maybe 3 years and I print a lot

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 31/08/2022 21:25

I've been pondering about other ways that DH could more usefully direct his scrooge tendencies. For instance it occurred to me as I was loading the dishwasher that DD always pours out a full glass of juice, but only ever drinks two-thirds of it, usually one or two glasses a day. If DH managed to stop that then it would save more money than the ink shenanigans does.

Also, using eggs and milk in the wrong date order so that some are just left to go off. DH is the one that does that, I always check which is older and needs to be used first. Admittedly we don't throw away enough to pay for a full ink change, but still.
