Hi everyone.

I've changed my name because this is embarrassing but I've been here years and mumsnet would be able to check this out if need be.

I work for the nhs as a nurse. I support one child as a single mum. I normally can afford "life" ,I'm not comfortable for money but I get by each month. This months it seems someone is against me and every bill has came at once, two appliances have broken and my car is now sitting in the street completely gone. I guess it's just bad luck and I'm not looking for any sympathy as I'm very independent but I'm looking for advice. I have bad credit from previous years before my child. I've been applying for loans and all that's got me was a million spam emails. Is there any help at all for nhs workers? The cost of living has completely drained me this month and I'm sitting on emergency electric! Will the council help? I'm really unsure what to do I'm just looking to see if anyone else has been through this and can advise?

I've seen a lot of trolls in my years on here so any verification mumsnet needs to check me out is fine!

Thanks mumsnetters

Are you on any benefits? That helps determine eligibility to things. Check you are getting all you're entitled to at www.turn2us.org.uk

Some councils give grants for white goods. The charity Emmaus also have lower priced new white goods.

The Blue Light card gives you discounts.

If you do need a loan, a low cost option may be a credit union? My local one is called Hoot.

"Members are encouraged to save for the future and in return, they receive affordable credit, free insurance and access to low cost loans.
The interest received on the loans pays for the administration of the Credit Union with any surplus being put into reserves and, when possible, paid back to the members in the form of dividends."

I tried the benefit calculator before it said I wasn't entitled to anything even on a single parents wage and my childcare fees for the month (after school) are £400.

Ok so the credit union, if I join today do you know roughly how long it would take to borrow? Even £20 to keep my electric on 🫣😂 I sound greedy I'm not I'm just trying to look into all my options now.

Thanks so much guys it's really appreciated

Contacting Step change is an option depending on what outgoings/debts you have

wishthiswasreallife · 31/08/2022 16:22

Luckily no debts now just a sketchy credit history. I did think since my credit score is 600 I'd have a not bad chance of a loan but I think it needs to be much higher!

No experience but is it possible to get an advance on wages or contact HR at your Trust to see if they know anything available. Would none of your colleagues help, I'm NHS and we just helped someone with getting things together for new home that arrived from another country and I would definitely lend money to a colleague that I knew well in your situation. Checkout your intranet, ours sometimes has white goods free to good home type thing or cheaply, they may wait for next pay day for cash.

Royal College of Nursing ( if you are a member) may have loans available.
