No one is talking about Pakistan…

The climate catastrophe has caused the most devastating flooding in Pakistan. Well over a thousand people have died so far and over 6 million people are displaced - one third of the country is under water!
This is a horrific crisis and they are desperately in need of aid. It is deteriorating rapidly with more to come.
I have not seen it mentioned at all, and when I mentioned it to a friend she hasn’t heard of it at all.
Therefore I am posting here as I wanted to bring some more awareness to the situation.

It was on ch4 news. Looks horrific.

AntlerRose · 30/08/2022 16:46

I know. I cant work put why it isnt the lead item everywhere. Its clearly on the news a bit because I know about it but its huge.

GoodVibesHere · 30/08/2022 16:47

It's awful, 1/3 of the country is under water! It was on BBC breakfast this morning and is on the BBC website. I've been hearing about it everywhere, it is definately a news story.

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 30/08/2022 16:47

It was on the BBC news last night. It's incomprehensible that a third of the country is submerged.

SupDuck · 30/08/2022 16:50

Sorry, I meant I hadn’t seen a thread here about it.

I am finding it incomprehensible the level of disaster.

The areas worst effected are the poorest according to reports and the new government aren't as socially minded. It'll end up a full on humanitarian catastrophe.

shivermetimbers77 · 30/08/2022 16:56

It’s awful and a real sign of what is to come everywhere if we don’t act on the climate emergency.

SupDuck · 30/08/2022 16:57

So unjust that the people who will have contributed the least to the problem are suffering the most.

OP posts:
RagzRebooted · 30/08/2022 16:59

I have to admit, I hadn't realised it was a bad as it is until yesterday. My first thought was, oh that's weird I haven't seen anything about it on MN!
It really is a huge disaster and I think the impact will end up being more than many natural disasters, it just didn't happen as quickly/dramatically as a tsunami or earthquake.

Parkingt111 · 30/08/2022 17:08

Thank you for starting this thread, the videos I have seen on social media are nothing short of horrific
Its not discussed enough though, this is a humanitarian crisis that needs more attention

iwishihadaname · 30/08/2022 17:11

very sad about Pakistan. Afghanistan has floods too

It's too late. We needed to act in the 2000s and 2010s.

We have already gone beyond the tipping point.

Western governments aren't very friendly towards Pakistan any more. They gave sanctuary to the Taliban when they were ousted from Afghanistan and the Taliban just sat in Pakistan and waited for the Americans to leave, then walked straight in.

It hasn't gone down well with western governments.

Horrible for the poor innocent civilians though 😢

Whatever you think about the actions of the government, it’s hardly the fault of the poor people who are losing everything!

Bloodybridget · 30/08/2022 17:24

@Wearefoooked22 are you saying we should have no sympathy for people losing their homes, belongings, livestock, loved ones?

DenholmElliot1 · 30/08/2022 17:26

I agree - but part of the post was asking why this wasn't getting much media reporting and I imagine it's because we're not friendly with Pakistan anymore. Also, the poorer and more incapacitated they are, the less of a threat they are. Horrid but true

FinanceLPlates · 30/08/2022 17:34

@DenholmElliot1 I was responding more to the poster above you who seemed to be unable to make that distinction

Surtsey · 30/08/2022 17:34

Coverage has been on the BBC news website for several days. I don't watch the tv news so don't know about that.

Soubriquet · 30/08/2022 17:35

I’ve seen some pretty horrendous comments on fb about this including

“it floods every year anyway. They should be used to it by now”
”the uk needs more help with their energy crisis”

So yeah. People know. They just don’t care about the poor brown people.

BashfulClam · 30/08/2022 17:36

It has been on the news. Unfortunately countries need to reduce their foreign aid bills so this couldn’t be worse.

Simonjt · 30/08/2022 17:44

The new government really isn’t fussed about community etc, they also don’t need the votes of the poor to remain in power. They’re probably quite happy that thousands of citizens living in poverty have dies.

Flooding has been getting worse in Pakistan for quite a while, but nothing on this scale.

Access to clean water is a huge emergency, flooding won’t be the major cause of death soon, it will be diarrhoea.

The west will most likely be quite pleased that Pakistan has become more vulnerable, sadly poor brown people will be a price many are willing to pay.

Khalsa aid is arranging help in flood hit areas, including providing clean water and more shelters for those displaced. They have quite a hefty team in Pakistan which really helps, more volunteers from the UK will be going over in the coming weeks.

Spanielsarepainless · 30/08/2022 17:50

It's a tragedy. But it's been all over the television news and on Radio 4 news. I can't see how you can say no one is mentioning it.

Synny · 30/08/2022 17:52

Agree there seems to be a lack of coverage in term of the severity.

A local community group is asking for donations but not sure how they will reach the aid that's needed. (Clothes etc)
