Ripping up new carpet because floor creaks?

oheharan · 30/08/2022 16:10

Basically moved into our house last year.
Put new carpet in every room.
12 months later the floorboards in most rooms are creaking when we walk on them.
I've told partner I want to lift up all carpets and replace with laminate flooring after fixing floorboards.
He thinks I'm being stupid and spending money for nothing because of a creaky floor
What do you think?
Gonna cost £2000 plus

Why can’t you fix the floor boards then put the carpet back?

oheharan · 30/08/2022 16:13

I've decided laminate flooring is more suitable

If you have the cash it's up to you. Its incredibly wasteful though, and I'm sure we'll all be glad of our carpets this winter.

Wow, what an indulgent use of money.

I guess if you've got loads of it and fancy changing things on a whim that were only installed a year ago... then go for it!

Personally, I'd just live with a squeaky floor. Well, I'd actually have sorted the floorboards when the carpets were done last year 😉

It's entirely your own business, but seeing as you specifically asked what we think...

It's wasteful and over indulgent when squeeky floors are most often a minor inconvenience. I'd live with them and use their squeek as a reminder to do things properly next time Grin

Your partner is right, it’s wasteful and precious.

you did ask 🤷‍♀️

I'd pull up, fix the creaks and put back down tbh. I'm not sure I'd be replacing it all with laminate just because! Carpet will feel so much warmer in winter too.

What if the floorboards creak again in a year, will you go back to carpet?

stargirl1701 · 30/08/2022 16:36

No, not good for the planet. You need to wait until the carpet is worn out and then replace it. Make do with what you have.
