Painful periods!

Hi all,

I wonder if you lovely people in my phone can shed some light on a question Dr Google can't answer. I have horrendously painful and heavy periods, they have got so bad I can't leave the house for several days a month. The pain is debilitating, and very difficult to control. I have been prescribed mefenamic acid which is not working for me. Even with paracetamol on top I'm still in pain. The pain is not so bad and I can cope, but it's not gone. If I don't get on top of my pain, I end up a clammy, sweaty mess, unable to function, feeling stick and dizzy and helpless. I have been told previously to have the coil, but I'm unsure. I have a pelvic organ prolapse and worry this would cause problems? Also I was told by a gynaecologist some years ago as the implant didn't work for me the coil wouldn't either, however my GP says that's rubbish?! Anyone have any similar experiences and found anything to help? Or could anyone with the coil and pelvic organ prolapse tell me if it worked for them or not? What problems or benefits has anyone had from the coil? How easy is it to have fitted and removed? TIA

You have my sympathy. I had Horrendously painful and heavy periods. The Mirena coil just made me bleed constantly and did nothing wrt the pain.

Tranexamic acid, Mefanemic acid, co codamol -nothing really helped. I did have a few fibroids. I struggled on for a few years with Gynae suggesting various pills, the coil, etc then I finally had enough and insisted on a hysterectomy. It turns out I actually had endometriosis as well as fibroids. They missed it somehow.

You could ask the GP to be referred back to gynae, an up to date scan wouldn’t hurt - although there are longer than ever waiting times for non urgent referrals atm but maybe not in every area of the U.K.?
