Butter or not? Butter seems unnecessarily extravagant, but is nice, yes?

As opposed to plain?...

Tbh croissant anything 😋 poached egg, jam, cheese, chocolate......

watcherintherye · 30/08/2022 09:13

I wouldn’t put butter in a croissant - there’s enough fat in them already. I usually have jam, marmalade or honey!

SoupDragon · 30/08/2022 09:13

They seem so dry without butter but they have so much in already... it's a dilemma!

sometimes I get away with just jam.

Playplayaway · 30/08/2022 09:14

I find them a waste of calories personally. I find a pan au chocolat more satisfying.

Craftybodger · 30/08/2022 09:15

There’s enough butter in them already. Jam for me, or baked with ham & cheese.

NewbieSM · 30/08/2022 09:18

If you're already eating one, why not make it better?! Butter equals better imo Grin

NumptiesIncorporated · 30/08/2022 09:18

I don't have them often, so I will add butter to a plain croissant.

Interestingly @Playplayaway I always find a pain au chocolat to be a bit disappointing. Doesn't quite live up to the promise. It's my least favourite of the breakfast pastries for that reason.

MissyB1 · 30/08/2022 09:21

I love a plain croissant, nothing on it, but it has to be a good quality one. I heat it up gently.

hopsalong · 30/08/2022 09:24

Butter and jam! Preferably raspberry.

If you don't want to be having butter, you might as well have dry toast and jam. But I like butter.

Whataplanker · 30/08/2022 09:25

Butter and jam!

Harrriet · 30/08/2022 09:26

Butter and jam on a piece I save for the last bite.

Lightningrain · 30/08/2022 09:26

No butter for me. There’s enough already in it.

I like them plain if they’re freshly baked and warm but occasionally will have jam.

ILiveInAmphibia · 30/08/2022 09:26

Oh I was hoping this would be about how to pronounce croissant, I always struggle with it!

Clevs · 30/08/2022 09:27

Too dry without butter!

MissDollyMix · 30/08/2022 09:28

Yes definitely warmed with butter and jam.

Novum · 30/08/2022 09:34

Definitely butter.

Oh I was hoping this would be about how to pronounce croissant, I always struggle with it!

For imported words I tend to go with the closest approximation to the pronunciation in the original language that can be obtained using sounds commonly found in English. So not full-on French pronunciation, which would sound weird in the middle of an English sentence, and not kroysant, but more like kwasson.

WeegieWan · 30/08/2022 09:36

I say 'kwoh-sohn' sometimes 'kwah-sohn' but for me the r and the t are always silent.... unless I'm feeling like being arsey and annoying, in which case 'croy-zant' (nooooo!😱).

Homemade lemon curd for choice please!

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 30/08/2022 09:47

Definitely with butter. I probably have about six croissants a year so don't worry too much about the extra butter.

xsquared · 30/08/2022 10:14

They're not too dry if you put them in the oven for 5 minutes.

Way too greasy with butter if they've been warmed.

larkstar · 30/08/2022 10:18

Ah, not a new baby name thread then...

Ah, not a new baby name thread then...

That thought occurred to me too 🤣

MissMatty2hats · 30/08/2022 10:21

Cream cheese and jam on a warm croissant, spooned onto each torn off bite. Unbeatable!

BarrelOfOtters · 30/08/2022 10:25

Not a bad baby name...

I don't like jam so it's just croissant. Have about 3 a year so I'm not sure it's the butter on my infrequent croissant that is making me fat.

And pain au chocolat, unless freshly baked, is also my most disappointing breakfast pastry.

Nutoka every time (not Nutella!) and they have to be fresh. Either the make your own or Morrisons do some great ones from their bakery. Any that come in a plastic bag are just chewy and not the true French experience!!
