can’t help but think the office is going to be busier.

A season ticket from my village to London costs £4k a year.

So, no.

PilatesPeach · 30/08/2022 10:43

People will start wfh but at the gym for example - plenty of the clubs have free wifi and you can sit there all day without buying a coffee, get your shower there and use the loos and stay warm. Hopefully they won't all be on lots of zoom calls but at the clubs I work at, people are always wfh for the day already.

I suspect my employer will turn the heating down to the minimum they can get away with legally, so not sure it would be much warmer in the office!

I’m on pre pay meters. Last year on the very coldest days I was spending approx £3 a day on gas. It costs me £50 p/w to commute. That gives me £10 per day to stick in my meter. Even with the price hikes, that should cover it. Plus I’m benefitting from keeping my own house warm. Rather than returning home, freezing cold, to enter a freezing cold house!

There is no minimum legal temperature for indoor workplaces.

It must be "reasonable" and "comfortable" - but then who is to define those terms?

House still has to be heated whether I am here or not (I suppose I could shut off the gas & EL while I am at work but I think OH may complain) so no, not really any saving and of course commuting costs are high.

I WFH 2-days and have to go into the office 2-days, fed up with prospect of having to go back to the office FT so am taking early retirement.

bananaboats · 30/08/2022 11:05

No the saving from commuting far outweighs the saving in energy. I don't have the heating on during the day and have worked from home the past 2 winters with no issues.

lightand · 30/08/2022 11:08

Many have moved houses thinking wfh was permanent.
They wont be keen on getting back to the office.

lightand · 30/08/2022 11:08

And that includes some bosses.
Cant see them being over keen either.

SavingsThreads · 30/08/2022 11:12

Yep! I already go on 2/3 days. my commuting costs £6 a day which is less than the cost of heating the house and being there all day.

Numbat2022 · 30/08/2022 11:12

Nope. Train is £36 per day peak, there's no way it'll be worth it. I used to pay the season ticket price without thinking, but with the way costs have increased I'm not sure I would have been able to carry on commuting to work anyway - I might have had to look for a job nearer home.

Plus as others have said, if I went into the office regularly I would need more office clothes, I'd doubtless buy the odd Pret or coffee, lunches out with colleagues, wear and tear in my bike to get to the station... commuting is expensive.

jelly79 · 30/08/2022 13:32

No because I live too far now! But I have a gym membership that costs £45 a month and allows me to hot desk with free tea and coffee! That will be happening more

mmmflakycrust81 · 30/08/2022 14:19

No, London commuter with high transport costs. Relocating desk into a warmer smaller room with carpet for the winter. Plus I would still have to schlep to the train station in the dark, cold and wet. No thanks!

hattie43 · 30/08/2022 18:00

I'm not going back into the office , the flexibility of wfh outweighs any increased heating costs . Another big plus is I can walk my dogs in daylight when wfh whereas in the office I get home in the dark so have to pay a dogwalker more often

idonotmind · 30/08/2022 18:02

Nope! It's too far and I don't like my colleagues. Expensive also.

ThreePotatoFloor · 30/08/2022 18:10

Lol nah. Fuck that.

i don’t think WFH should be a substitute for wraparound care though…

User148563 · 01/09/2022 17:57

I'm surprised so many didn't have the heating on last year, I'm early retired and had it on all day, I wouldn't have wanted to bundle up in an Oodie

balalake · 01/09/2022 19:30

I won't be any more than I do now.

I suppose it depends on how active you are during the day. I’m early retired and the heating was only on first thing and early evening last winter. It will only be on early evening next winter.

me neither
I dont fancy lung problems[bit of a family trait].
Plus when they say choose food or heat, I say i choose both and will forgo other things. Less going out, less well almost anything quite frankly.
