I personally think I'm too old to be this hooked on TikTok (only recently got involved, very late in terms of using it)... but wondering who's your fave to watch?

I am kinda hooked on people that I am staggered are even on there... I don't want to watch but I can't turn off!

TIA :-)

Is this seriously what Mumsnet has become?

Energydrink · 30/08/2022 00:39

You are going to pay for likes?

Love tktok for the humour, music and dancing , cat videos and all the sharing of health tips and recipes. I’ve leaned loads about blood glucose levels, and intermittent fasting, apple cider vinegar, castor oil packs…the list goes on! It’s encyclopaedic there! Also tons of stunning gay women.

A lot of it can be taken with a pinch of salt.

Most of what I have seen about autism snd ADHD is bullshit, same with most health videos tbh.

Ravageur · 07/12/2022 12:03

I like the dog grooming ones, the lady who saves bees, the lady who cleans old graves up

Ravageur · 07/12/2022 12:04

I would never take advice of any sort though - that way madness lies if you ask me

Its format is horribly addictive. It's a Chinese company but banned in China; they realise its harmful effect on children.

I find a lot of it disturbing. Particularly mothers of severely disabled children who use them to beg for money.

BonnesVacances · 07/12/2022 12:09

I teach in China and it's not banned there. They watch it and don't need a VPN.

The level to which people are willing to expose their children is worrying.

I understand that China has a version called douyin which limits how much children can use it and has stricter content moderation rules, is that what you mean? Everywhere I've seen says TikTok is not available in China.

Doliveira · 07/12/2022 12:30

There isn’t a different breed of people on TikTok. It’s the same mixture of good/ not so good/ utter schtick as everywhere else. Be selective, and it’s tons of fun and sharing with interesting people.

BonnesVacances · 07/12/2022 12:38

@CosmopolitanPlease I dunno. Confused I asked her what she'd been doing that day and she said she'd been watching TikTok all day. I was surprised and asked if it was via a VPN (as many of my students watch western stuff via VPN) and she said no. She's a uni student though so maybe has more access to stuff like that than under 18s.

I know that younger students are restricted on how much time they can spend on games etc depending on their age. But apparently that's only via their phones and they can play as much as they want on a PC via Steam.

fortifiedwithtea · 07/12/2022 12:54

I am addicted to Tiktok too, its not all teenagers. The algorithm sends more of the same type of content according to which ones you watch to the end, watch on repeat etc.

I like Susie Edge the historian lots of gruesome details of Kings deaths. Back door/stage (? Not sure which) Jonny the Linguist. I also follow Phil the Cambridgeshire major on his amazing weight loss journey. Plus I like loads of daft animals, and dance routines.

I'm seeing a lot of this on Twitter - lots of stories about disabled children, swiftly followed by an Amazon Wishlist.

That's great to hear! TikTok has become such a diverse platform with so much to offer, from entertainment and humor to education and sharing tips. It's amazing how much information you can gain from the app, including health tips, recipes, and learning about different lifestyles. And of course, the cat videos are always a highlight!
