Books in cot?

Hi all,

Does anyone put books in their DC's cot for them to 'read' when they wake up?

My DD17 months loves her books, especially the musical/noise ones. I wondered whether it would be useful/sensible to put some books in her cot to keep her occupied a little longer in the mornings (for those days that she wakes up at 6 rather than 7!)... Does it work?

She sleeps right through, but do I run the risk of her waking up in the middle of the night and starting to play?

She already has some soft toys that she happily strokes and cuddles.

Thanks all!

Yes we did (still do) this, probably not at 17m but certainly by 2 my daughter was asking for whatever books she had at bedtime to have in her cot. Just make sure they’re board or cloth or charity shop ones which you don’t mind if they end up ripped or chewed!!

occasionally my daughter will be messing around ‘reading’ when she should be going to sleep but invariably this is when she’s not tired and wouldn’t be sleeping anyway. I’d rather she was looking at some books than whinging and demanding my attention instead!

now (at 3.5) she has a grow clock and if she wakes before the sun is up she will sit and look at books/listen to yoto cards until it’s time to wake us up.

My parents did this when I was tiny, books in the cot. I can sort of remember that stage and it carried on into me self-settling with books long term.

I grew into a big reader and now I’m an editor.

So on reflection, maybe you should put something else in the cot, something that’ll pay better Grin

We did this - it worked pretty well except for occasional destruction of books, so I'd agree with a previous poster to only use soft or board books that you won't mind if they get spoiled.

Haha I'd love it if books became part of her profession! Though perhaps editing the next Harry Potter, so she gets paid well!

I just love the idea of books becoming her comfort, rather than TV!

We have plenty of charity shop books, so plenty to destroy!

It sounds like it's not a totally stupid idea then... might give it a go and see what happens!

Yes we did it. My lot loved books, being read to, 'reading' to themselves etc, and it's stuck.
