I dont remember knocking it. However it doesn't mean i haven't im always walking into stuff rushing about.
It was tender for a day or 2 then just black. It was closer to the nail bed i think. I then painted them and too lazy to remove it until now. And noticed its still there. Do i need to see a gp
I wouldn't want to waste their time.

Bruises to nails have to grow out, IME.

Hellocatshome · 28/08/2022 21:51

I dont know but I'm interested as I have had a bruised toenail for months now. I kind of just assumed it would go away eventually.

Blowyourowntrumpet · 28/08/2022 21:52

No. You don't need to see a doctor. What do you expect them to do?

I think if you bruise your nail, the blood gets trapped, so you just need to wait for it to grow out. I'm not a doctor though. Might do no harm to go to a pharmacy and speak to the pharmacist for advice.

MissMaple82 · 28/08/2022 21:55

No, they can take months to grow out

Chdjdn · 28/08/2022 21:55

I had this and just waited for it to grow out although it took months

greenacrylicpaint · 28/08/2022 21:56

if it grows out it's fine.
however if it doesn't it needs to be checked as melanoma can occour under nails.

MissMaple82 · 28/08/2022 21:56

Don't waste their time!

UpsideDownDownsideUp · 28/08/2022 21:57

Ive never experienced it. Then my mum said about a melanoma under nail and has worried me. I never see a gp and put lots off that i shouldn't.

As pp says bruised nails stay bruised until they grow out, which takes 6-9 months apparently (just googled out of interest!)

CountessOfSponheim · 28/08/2022 22:02

Make a resolution to see your GP about the significant stuff, but this isn't it. Bruises under toenails have to grow out so it'll last longer than many relationships.

UpsideDownDownsideUp · 28/08/2022 22:04

Ok thank you for keeping me grounded. Now to tell DM to not be so ott

I think your mum means hematoma (another word for bruise).

UpsideDownDownsideUp · 28/08/2022 22:13

@MadameCholetsDirtySecret she said subungual melanoma found behind nails.

Mine took a year recently to grow out. And now I have bruised it again :(

chillivanilli · 28/08/2022 22:17

You can get it from wearing shoes that are too tight too. I'm a beauty therapist and see this fairly often it will either grow out or drop off and then a new nail will grow. Melanoma usually presents as a dark straight line and is very rare I've never seen it in person and I've seen a lot of hands and feet over the last 25 years.

Nope. You can get a melanoma under the nail which then grows out continuously in your nail.

OP, if there is new, clean nail at the cuticle end now, then I think that means that it’s just damage and will grow out. As I understand it, if it’s melanoma it would keep growing out with the discoloured area continuously appearing.

I don’t know if a GP would be very specialist in this sort of thing. Perhaps you could make an appointment with a proper chiropodist: they might be able to tidy it up for you and reassure you it’s nothing to worry about.

CorsicaDreaming · 28/08/2022 22:53

It's happened to me from wearing ski boots that were too tight. Initially my nail looked like yours and eventually went fully black and then the whole nail fell off. Over time a new one grew back and it now looks absolutely fine and exactly the same as the other one.

However if you are not sure how you did it, it may well be it was from too tight shoes as blows to the toes are generally fairly painful IME so I think you'd remember it. Might be worth thinking if any of your shoes could have caused it.

feeona123 · 28/08/2022 23:19

I had a bruise under one of my finger nails after getting it hit, after a while most of the nail fell off!

UpsideDownDownsideUp · 28/08/2022 23:47

Thanks. Not too tight shoes. I wear trainers or flip-flops / sliders only.
And since this only the latter.

You absolutely CAN get melanoma under your toe or finger nails and it looks exactly like a bruise (like OP’s), and this is why the OP is concerned. OP is not being dramatic.

Google it, but don’t for the love of god put someone off going to the GP for what could be a life threatening condition.
