Single Mattress’ suitable for baby? Not cot/cot bed size

Have just bought dd a cot which has turned out to be the same size as a single bed 🫣 has anyone got any recommendations for a mattress that would be suitabe for her?

she won’t be in it until she turns 6 month or so, not sure if that makes a difference! I know regular mattresses aren’t meant to be suitable for babies?!?

Babies cosleep on regular mattresses all the time, what makes you think they aren’t suitable?

Just get a firm one and it’ll be fine. Ikea is good value for money. Don’t skip the waterproof sheet!

Any mattress is fine. Ikea do a good firm one, I think its called Malfors or something like that. Waterproof sheet or two and you're good to go

Are you sure it’s the size of a single bed and not a toddler bed? That would massive.

GoAround · 28/08/2022 17:07

But yes good point from PP, are you sure it’s not cot/toddler bed sized so 70x140cm?

Youcancallmeirrelevant · 28/08/2022 17:09

Definitely check the size, cot beds are bigger than toddler beds but still smaller than a single bed.

And yes to repeat what PP said about confusion over matresses, not sure how it could be 'unsafe'

BertieBotts · 28/08/2022 17:09

Where did you get it from? I've never seen a single bed sized cot and usually they are really expensive as designed for disabled people. So I'd be worried it's not up to proper standards if you bought online.

Otherwise I would check if it's 70x140 as others have said. Single bed is 90x 200.

Definitely single bed size! It’s this one. arthauss.co.uk/collections/all/products/wooden-bunk-bed-konrad-with-cot-bed?variant=32751737012301

in my defence, i bought it while very sleep deprived because it can be used as two separate beds (won’t be using it as bunk beds) not actually realising it would be a full sized bed with some bars around it!!

could cancel but not sure as it’s made to order.

no idea about the mattress thing!? Maybe I made it up! I’m sure I read something about them being unsafe because baby can roll/suffocate. I think I read it right in the thick of co sleeping with dd and feeling anxious!

Ah the bunk makes sense, it’s a really clever design actually!

Babies should be on a firm mattress for the reasons you’ve said so just buy a firm single mattress and you’re sorted.

BertieBotts · 28/08/2022 19:38

It does look like the bars are the right width apart but I would double check what the minimum width needs to be, apologies/warning in advance as this is a horrible read but I couldn't help but think of it when you said it's custom built. The safety standard for cots and cotbeds probably doesn't apply to a bed this size so you would want to check that it meets requirements before using it.

Mattress wise I agree with others, I don't think it will matter as long as it's firm, I think it's in America where most adult mattresses are a lot softer than baby mattresses, I haven't noticed a big difference in firmness between adult and cot mattresses here. You could possibly look for an extra thin one?

Do check for gaps around the edge as well, as a 6 month old baby could get trapped in a gap (it's their body, not their head which is a problem - if they roll to the edge and get stuck).

Notjustabrunette · 29/08/2022 13:05

Ah, makes sense now. At least it will last you a really long time.
