Cheap breakfast for non milk drinking fussy child

Didicat · 28/08/2022 10:58

So DS6 has never drank milk and doesn’t like milk substitutes either - will occasionally eat dried cereal. He prefers to have two prepackaged pastries- brioche, choc au pains etc…. Also doesn’t eat eggs….

  1. I’d like him to eat something healthier for breakfast
  2. less plastic packaging
  3. something cheaper

so hit me with some suggestions for quick nutritiously sensible breakfasts for the super fussy!

Well the obvious answer would be toast or fruit.
We would all prefer to eat pastries etc for breakfast as its essentially pudding dressed up as breakfast but its not a good idea.

maddy68 · 28/08/2022 11:04

Omlette.
Boiled egg
Toast

WalkingOnSonshine · 28/08/2022 11:04

I make a big batch of banana pancakes and freeze them, heat them up quickly in the toaster & serve with Greek yoghurt and fruit.

Beans on toast.

I know you said he doesn’t eat eggs - is that a dislike or allergy? If a dislike, would he have them as eggy bread? I normally do peanut butter eggy bread with frozen berries mashed up, or a savoury one with ham and cheese.

DS isn’t a big egg fan, but doesn’t realise it’s egg.

Fussy one in my house eats oatcakes with cream cheese and apple slices

PermanentTemporary · 28/08/2022 11:05

Changechangychange · 28/08/2022 11:06

Toast? With either peanut butter or mashed bananas. Or cheese on toast.

Cheese on a bread roll? Bit lunch-y, but it’s just a continental breakfast.

Fruit salad and yoghurt? Granola and yoghurt?

Smoothie?

Cheese and beans quesadilla? I appreciate that is a bit random, but you could get a wrap, put a bit of tinned refried beans and grated cheese on it, microwave and fold up. DS has been eating that for an easy lunch the last few weeks, and it is close enough to a breakfast burrito to be acceptable, I reckon. Very filling, lots of protein.

Pastries in a large packet of 4 or 12 together instead of the ones that come individually wrapped would at least cut down the plastic.

Can you start by cutting it to one pastry plus one something else - banana, piece of toast, toasted English muffin, crumpet? Would he eat a homemade muffin with hidden veggies/less sugar?

Whataretheodds · 28/08/2022 11:08

Will he not eat egg in any form? You can premake individual breakfast frittatasin a muffin tin.

Breakfast muffins - various recipes online. Not cakey things, made with cornbread and veg. Again easy to make in advance/freeze.

Toast and peanut butter or (cottage) cheese.

Porridge made with water (if no good made with milk).

SuperCamp · 28/08/2022 11:09

Banana sandwich
Peanut butter on toast
Cheese on toast
Oatcakes and slice of cheese (I used to cut cheese into Lego sized chunks: Cheese Lego)
Ham sandwich

elizabethdraper · 28/08/2022 11:09

Breaks on toast
porridge
cold meats, cheese and fruit
muesli and yoghurt
smoothies

yikesanotherbooboo · 28/08/2022 11:12

We often had tuna or sardines or cheese on toast before school.
Left over cold pasta if any available.
Beans on toast
Generally an egg in some form.
Porridge made with water if can't have milk.

LionessesRules · 28/08/2022 11:13

Bread and marmite for my none cereal eater.
Toast and bovril for his low milk eating mother.

SheWoreYellow · 28/08/2022 11:15

Toast - one piece with peanut butter on, one with supermarket version of Nutella.

Bestcatmum · 28/08/2022 11:16

Overnight oats made with water. I have that for breakfast everyday made with porridge, water, fruit banana/berries and yoghurt with a bit of honey.

wantmorenow · 28/08/2022 11:21

Overnight oats made with orange juice with some frozen fruit added

Muesli eaten with orange juice instead of milk (I hate milk and yoghurt too)

Anything that he likes - doesn't have to be a breakfast food e.g. beans on toast, sandwich, left over anything

TerminallyIndecisive · 28/08/2022 12:01

Beans on toast

Cheese on toast

TrianglePlayer · 28/08/2022 12:33

Tesco crumpets are about 35p for six. Stick some peanut butter on and you’ve got quite a decent filling breakfast.

TwoShades1 · 28/08/2022 12:49

What sort of lunch foods does he like? Surely he can just have them for breakfast too. The notion that certain foods should be eaten at certain times of the day is odd. There is no reason that breakfast needs to contain milk, eggs or sweet things.

felulageller · 28/08/2022 13:50

Any food can be eaten at any time of the day.

If you already have restrictions dont be limited to 'breakfast' foods.

Lulibee · 28/08/2022 13:53

Porridge. It is so cheap and filling. I make mine with half milk/half water but you could make it with all water and add some fruit to it.
