It is with regret that we have to advise you of the termination of your employment as of the end of September.

In this current economic climate we require more experienced and self motivated staff to achieve market share in our very competitive field, and feel that your personal and academic skills would be more suited to the career you trained for.

I would like to thank you for your efforts during recent weeks, and will assist you as much as possible during this month to gain new employment.

We wish you every success in the future.

It must have had an impact on you if you have kept the letter for over 30 years. I am sure nothing like that would ever be sent today, as HR and legal teams would be fearful of being sued.

Did the company succeed in achieving market share in its "very competitive field"?

Unlikely.

I had a random visit from a representative of HMRC in relation to my job/the company a few months later at my home address asking if I had ever seen an order book (I hadn't). There were other questions too but I can't remember/don't care.

So....it was all a tax dodge was it ?

There was no payroll we were each paid by manual salary cheque in an envelope. Unusual for a multi-national electronics company. There were about six of us in total in that random office on the edge of a business park. Nobody was happy, I think today it would be described as toxic.

I have never put that I worked there on my CV. Fuck 'em. A whole generation has passed by since then so, long since disappeared behind me.

My worst one spelt my fucking name wrong.
