Anyone make their own clothes?

I've just been given a sewing machine and I'm really keen to make some clothes, just a few basic skirts maybe to start in interesting fabrics. Dd is also desperate for us to have some matching clothes, hmm.

Does anyone sew their own, and care for a natter about it?

I've just started ! Made a skirt! I've decided if I'm going to make clothes they need to be better than shop bought ones - so I've been watching couture sewing videos on you tube.

@SoupDragon thanks for the link

@RaelImperialAerosolKid have you done any classes or anything? I made a skirt, it's about 4 sizes too big, I think I was pulling the elastic wrong 😂but I'm going to alter it as my next project.

I made my first item of clothing for decades (excluding costumes for primary age DC!) just before my summer holiday. A pair of shorts. I was ridiculously pleased with them.

this was the pattern

I was contemplating it, I made trousers and a couple of t shirts decades ago in a sewing group & DM has given me her machine.

I spent ages looking up simple patterns (although it still seems very confusing), watching videos and costing material & I just don’t think I can afford to do it!

No classes - I can embroider quite well and know the basics of a sewing machine. I got Clare Schaefers book which comes with a dvd - the rest on YouTube. The skirt I made from an ikea blanket - but it fits really well and is quilted and lined - just waiting for colder weather to wear it.
The key is patience - do everything slowly and don't rush. Think of the sewing as the hobby not the finished product.
